why not open archery in Sept ?

Postby jdbuckshot » Wed Aug 29, 2012 2:41 pm

I think arkansas is opening Sept. 15th. i know lots of midwest states do as well. Ga opens mid september also.

i know most of those states have an earlier rut, buy if mississippi is so infatuated with minimizing deer numbers, why not let archery hunters have a crack at the bucks before they shed there velvet, if the state is concerned about killing does to early, then make it buck only. i really don't think it would hurt anything, and would make the bucks so much more predictable, and killable. they are super hard to kill once that velvet comes off.

whats your thoughs?

I'm all for it. It would be much easier to kill him the last two weeks of sept vs waiting till oct 1. Most of my crops are cut by oct 1 and the deer scatter.

Probably cause the MS season goes to the end of Jan. But I would love to get one in velvet. Seems we have enough deer here to open it a few weeks earlier.

I wouldn't mind it but as someone already stated, it's crazy hot still in September and a lot of times even up into October.

Hot? The deer don't care that it's hot, they live outside. It's hot in November half the time.

Doesn't have anything to do with it. Arkansas opens Sept. 15th and goes to Feb 28th. Heck, part of South Carolina's rifle season opened on August 15th and runs to January 1st. The states pretty much have free reighn on their own deer seasons. They aren't federally regulated like waterfowl seasons.

Because MDWFP hasn't approved it, that's why.

Well no $#!^. But what's their reasoning? A lot of other southeastern states start their bow season earlier. Just curious. Sure they set the dates that way for a reason.

That was my best answer. I don't know why. Talking to a commissioner is the only way to know why, I guess. I'm sure lots of MDWFP employees and LEOs have their opinions and rumors why, and some of them may even be true. Without talking to one of them, it's all just speculation.
