Kidney Stones

Postby Seymore » Fri Aug 24, 2012 11:17 pm

Just got back from hospital where the wife had her third stone in 1 1/2 years removed. This is getting old. She's doing everything they tell her to do and they still come back. They have all been over 5mm which is the limit they said for whether they decide to take them or let them pass on their own. Doc said if he had the answer for how to prevent them he would win the Nobel prize for medicine. I know we've got several docs on the board. Anybody got any ideas other than no coke and diet. They have all been calcium oxylate stones. Problem I see is osteoporosis runs in her family and if she cuts calcium she runs a greater risk of that. I asked that question and they didn't have a real good answer other than we'll keep an eye on it and cross that bridge when she starts having signs of osteoporosis.

I know she's tired of this. I'm tired of going through the ER and sitting for several hours only to be sent upstairs and wait for several more to get to surgery. Then wait on recovery. Been there since early this morning, or yesterday morning now.

I have had more than I can count. Also calcium oxalate. Give up iced tea, its the biggest culprit. And chocolate. And drink the heck outta water. Those really helped me. Travis Bruce is also on the KS all-star team. Drop goosebruce a PM and he may have some info.

I hate it for you. If they starting giving y'all frequent flyer miles for every procedure or hospital visit your family has been through, I think you'd be on a trip to Hawaii right now.

We should at least have one wing of the hospital named after us by now.

I'm not a doctor, but I was once in pre-med. Has she tried consuming whiskey, wine, or beer? I don't have any scientific studies to back it up, but folks who regularly drink don't seem to get these stones. I've never had one. Since the doc doesn't know the answer either, hey, why not give it a try? A couple of glasses of wine in the evening is good for your heart as well as other things.

Here's at least one opinion that supports my proposition.

Worse case scenario, is that she generally feels better....and it could lead to more exciting evenings at home. It cures most of what ailes me. Martini night at my household is awesome. You can thank me later.
You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning.
