handgun suggestions

Postby tuscaloosahunter » Mon Jul 30, 2012 3:54 pm

I'm in the market for a pistol. Have never bought one before and was looking for some suggestions. I'm thinking 9 or 40 but am undecided. I'm not looking to spend more than $500.

Any suggestions?

Ive got a Springfield XD40 and love it. Going to run you a little more than $500 though. Shoots great and fits in the hand a whole lot better than a Glock IMO. Easy to take apart and clean as well.

What is it going to be used for? Shooting a pack of rabbid dogs that have run you up a tree stand? Use a 9mm, it hold lots of ammo. A pack of hogs doing you the same way? Get a bigger gun. Home defense? I'd suggest a revolver if you're sold on a handgun.

It's all a matter of personal opinion. Go hold a bunch of them and see what "fits" you better. Pistols are going to fit different people differently. I prefer Glocks, they fit me well and I can shoot them alright!

depends on the person and his/her intensions. I have a variety of makes and calibers and each one has its own purpose.

What he said. Shoot as many of your friends guns as you can too.

i recently got a smith & wesson m&p 40, on recommendation from here. i handled all of the 40's around $500 and it came down to springfield xd, s&w m&p, glock ??, and handled a walther ppq that was really nice, but just abit out of price range. s&w felt the best to me and it is a blast to shoot. trigger is a bit gritty at first, but has gotten smoother with about 500-600 rounds through it.

looking at s&w shield 40 for cc

my #1 go to gun that literally does it all and is super comfortable.... my taurus judge ultra light... 45/.410. After I bout it I realized I didn't have much use for any other pistol. If your looking for concealed carry though it's a little too bulky for that

Recently went down this road; chose the Glock 19 gen 4. I had planned to get the 40 but 9mm is so cheap and readily available I went there instead. I chose this for an all purpose pistol because I fits my hand and when I throw up on target it just wants to line up right.

A little bulky for CC; for that I'm prolly going to go with an LCP or a .38 snubby

For a CC, I'm almost settled on a hammerless S&W 642 with the Crimson Trace laser, .38 with +P ammo. I have bigger and more powerrful pistols. But that .38 is light, points naturally, and is easy to conceal.

corrected the model #

You can get a police trade-in glock 22 .40 for about $350 on gunbroker, just some holster wear, with 2 15-rd. mags. Just a thought.
you did put in the plug, right?

Go to every gun store in your area and play with every gun in your price range... pick what feels best.

I've shopped Bud's for years and Van's is right in line with their prices plus you get to actually feel the gun
