The season of 1988 / this years predictions

Postby GET-N-RITE » Wed Jul 25, 2012 11:37 am

Figured I would start a topic other than decoys or what gun / boat. Anyway last weekend we had a work day at camp and all the old timers are fired up due to the drought and terrible crops up north. They were talking about the 88 season and said it was just like this time of year, low water and bad crops. In 88 they said both ducks and geese were thick in the south. They pulled out some numbers and they killed 248 geese and around 600 plus ducks. So with that do you think we will see the push and the big kill numbers this year? Also I have no idea about 1988 as I was 4.

At this point in the summer I think this year is going to be the best one yet! Of course, I'm always optimistic and eager to go in late July!

Lack of food up north could serve to push ducks that normally stay if the weather is not too cold. However, I am afraid what will happen will mimic Arkansas and Mississippi in 2010 when the rains came and tens of thousands of acres of crops were left standing and insurance was paid out. I am afraid that crops that didn't turn out for harvest but still produced some grain in the midwest will be left standing for insurance purposes. So, in theory, this could actually work against us.

Same here. I have been watching to many duck hunting shows and looking at to many hunting magazines way to early. I'm pretty cocky about the season right now but I had the same feeling last year and it well sucked. Just was looking at the weather back then and it was cold.

The only two things we need for a good season are 1)Cold weather 2)low water in the Mississippi

Hard to know if what pushed the ducks down in 1988 was the poor crops or more than likely the lack of water.

I think more specifically, cold weather must equal snow. it can get really cold in cananda, but as long as there is no snow covering the food, you won't have the push that we need.

I feel very optimistic so much so that i just order 2 vortex machines, 3 - 2 pack of baby mojos (package deal price) and one of those decoy boss controllers so i can run all my electronics from one place and only have to carry one car battery...

I AM FIRED UP!!!!

Being a mojo dealer I was suprise to see them go with the controller deal. I hope no one on here uses one of those things! All I do I shake my head

You're guaranteed to kill birds with that setup. Migration or not. If you let me come on hunts to watch the primal carnage, then I will carry your car battery. May I, carry your car battery?

Keep in mind in 88 there was WAY less pressure. The limit was 3 ducks that year and if memory serves and it was the first year of it. Back then we went from 10 ducks/day to 3 so there was a large amount of discontent among hutners at the limit cut backs. Therefore many didn't hunt that year. I would suspect that was a big part of the good season, and also it was a COLD winter that year.

It was a great year for ducks I remember them well, kill your limits in 5 minutes then go catch trout and still be home before 10 am. It was fun, of course duck hunting is almost always fun no matter what the limits.

I just get all fired up when all of this new stuff is coming out and hearing stories about passing wads of 20-50 mallards cause a group of 20 plus chalk eyes were coming. I remember a few days like that but it was a long time ago. It just like every other almost end of July. Duck blind drawings, hunt test, and working on duck related activities get a man all primed up and what not.
Also think of the whinning that would happen if a 3 duck limit was set. Awwww lawd it would be awful
