new pup

so I'm pretty sure I'm getting a great british lab puppy at a great price from a really good bloodline.. my friend who has trained all his own labs said he'd train mine.. my question is
if the dog responds well to basic commands prior to formal training, can i take her hunting this year (not expecting good/great results) without instilling bad habits? will it "ruin" the dog
my friend says i wont happen this year (hunt/take the dog hunting)

If you do carry the pup hunting, be prepared to not hunt and take the time with the pup to not create any bad habits , breaking/ whining etc. How old will the pup be when season starts? IMO you don't need to create any bad habits that you have to bust him for later, hence the if you carry him dedicate yourself to the pup instead of the hunt! Good luck with your pup!!!!!!

5 months old now.. Will be 10 months old by big duck season.. I would only take her with me, no group hunts.. Just want to have fun with her but not instill any bad habits

Best bet is if u do want to take the pup hunting is for u and a hunting buddy go. Leave your gun in yge truck and focus on the pup.

If your friend training the dog says its not a good ideal there's no reason to even ask anyone else. Whomever is training the dog, friend or not, is going to. E the best judge of what is or what isn't right for the dog. If you don't trust his judgement find someone else now before he puts 5 months of work in a dog and you go against his will or cause work for him. If you trust his judgement, then trust him completely and do what he says. Not trying to be rude, but asking others to contradict your trainer is not a good way to start this process. Travis is right, also if you really want to hunt some with her , ask your friend/trainer about going so he can be in control of her and get the necessary corrections if needed. Just you, him, and her, he might be up for that!

In your case, what I've done in the past is take pup on some short hunts late in the season. Let the other guys call and shoot, just keep pup calm and see what's going on. But, like Travis said, if the trainer says he isn't ready, just wait. Go to some training days on over in the spring and do the pup a lot more good.
