Burgers in Oxford
Burgers in Oxford
Will be there in June for a wedding, understand there are some good ole fashion burger joints that one should visit. What is your suggestion. I am talking drive in back in the 60/70's type.

Phillips out by hospital used to be fantastic; Larry burger at Proud Larry's is pretty good; I'm sure there are others - not a fan of Handy Andy.
Re: Burgers in Oxford
Phillips Grocery is still pretty good. Went there about a month ago. There is a Christies there now that I understand is good. (The one in Columbus is good.) The Boure burger at Boure isn't too bad either. Not sure about 1960s drive in type burgers though.

Re: Burgers in Oxford
I think the closest thing to a '60's burger around Oxford is going to be Johnnies Drive-In in Tupelo. They still serve the old oatmill depression burgers. So, if you go there and do not want the oatmill burger, you have to tell them all beef/meat. If not, you will automatically be ordering/served an oatmill burger.
They aren't bad though.

The Snackbar has a really good burger. A John Currence restaurant, and imo the best in eats in Oxford. Their burger is 80% ground beef and 20% bacon that is mixed in the patty. Beef is from neola farms and the bacon is cut, cured, smoked in house and can be cooked to order.
Another great place for lunch in Oxford is Mama Jo's off North Lamar right past Molly Bar rd. Under 7 dollars for a plate of the best southern black woman food you've ever had, including dessert and a drink. Make sure and get the fried corn bread. You can't beat it.

Re: Burgers in Oxford
Grenada had a place called Gus's Little Widget, burgers made by hand, rolled with either bread or oatmeal and cooked on the flat top grill. ALways put the buns on there also to get a little of the flavor, man they were good. I have heard that Phillips was as close as you could get to the widget burgers. Could not remember the name, all sound good. May have to try them all. Thanks for all the replies.

Go to LB's meat market across the street from Kroger and get the Filet Burger or the House burger. You'll thank me later!

At Handy Andy I get the heated smoked turkey sandwich. My little girl likes the fried hot dog sandwich.

Ajax Diner, best burger around. Great menu and all food is excellent. Best all around eatery in Oxford.
