ask DS - Tires for Diesel

Postby huntersmky » Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:31 am

What are you guys running tire wise on your diesels and what kind of mileage are you getting out of them? I'm thinking of going with some Nitto A/T's as that's whats already on the truck, but I want to get as much mileage as I can out of these tires.

buddy of mine has an F250 with BF Goodrich AT's and he only has 10k miles on them and they are showing considerable wear for that type and quality of a tire

With those black rockstar rims, i figured you'd be asking about stack pipes like and 18wheeler in the bed...atleast thats what all the black rim diesels I've seen had.

I ran a set of cooper sst m/t's on my 2500. Had around 30k miles on them with about 10k left. The tread was closer together for a mud grip but more rubber on the ground under a diesel means more tire life to me.

my boss got the same tires i did, mine are on a 1/2 ton and his are on a 3/4, but the are the multi- mile wild country AT, i have 72000 on them and got a decent amount of life left, he has 50k on his and they still look awsome, we both pull alot of weight pretty often so i think they have done darn well, now we do both rotate the tires about every 6-8k miles

perfect. that's what I needed to know. I won't be driving this truck but about 10k miles a year, and most of that will be October - January going back and forth to the delta. 30k miles on a set just isn't going to cut it for me. I rotate mine every 5k miles. I was hoping someone would say try the Toyo MT's. Thought about getting some 33x12.50's. i'm like craziehunter above, the more tire on the ground, the longer I feel like they will last.

is your boss's 3/4 ton a diesel?

Brian, kiss my ass on the wheels. They were already on the truck or I wouldn't have them.

hunter go with toyo they are great tires. Just put some on my 150. My last truck i put some toyo at on it at 80k sold the truck with 120k they still had 70% or better, buddy didnt rotate them and sold it with 150k and still has the back tires on it. the front ones wore out soley from not having proper front end alignment.

Im expecting to get close to 80k-100k out of my set if all goes well

For a diesel Nitto Terra Grapplers are soft. They may be E rated, but they are a soft compound. Toyo and Nitto are the same company, so pretty much the same compound goes into both. That being said, I've heard great things about the Cooper STT's from diesel guys, plus its pretty much the same tread pattern as the Toyo and less money. Also heard good things about Mickey Thompson MTZ's.

Go with the Toyo MT's. I had a set of 37's on my F250. I put over 45k on them and they still rode like a street tire when I traded it in. Probably had another 10k in em. I dont exactly drive like a grandma either. I rotated them religiously every 5k. IMO they are the best tire out there if you want streetability & off road traction. I just put a set of 34's on my new truck. I used to run BFG in the summer & co-ops in the winter, but this tire does both well.

I run Toyo A/T'S on my F-250 diesel and really like them. Now they aint no mud tire but I don't plan on mud riding but I can ride out in the pasture and feed and get around most places I need to off road.

I have the 285/55/20 Nitto Tera Grapplers on my 2500 HD Diesel. I have over 30,000 miles on them and still have decent amount of tread left. I rotate them about every 7500 miles.

Don't forget Cooper. I am currently running the Discoverer AT3 now and the tires are wearing well...check them out.

It's got Nittos on it now, and I might be able to squeeze another 2k miles out of the rear tires. Front ones are still 50%. They are 305/55's

I purchased a new set of Nitto AT's(same tire thats on it now) from a guy on here that appear to be new. They are 295/65's which are taller but not as wide. I wonder how they will last being a little narrower. Hopefully they last me till next summer considering I won't be driving it that much.

tires for a 20" rim suck. I priced the toyo MT's and they were $1600.00

thanks for all the replies.
