No Sales Tax to be paid on a boat if he is purchasing a "Used Boat" from an out-of-state individual.

If used on public water even with a trolling motor it has to be registered. No motor, no register.

Arrogance knows no bounds...... if a person buys a boat from a dealer new or not you have to pay sales tax. If you buy it from an individual it does not. All you do is fill out the form copy the bill of sale and send money to correspond with the length indicated on the MS boat registration form.

I've never bought a new boat nor from a dealer. I've never had to show proof of sales tax. If it says something to the contrary on the registration form, I've overlooked it.

What was the arrogance comment about, Robert?

Lodi Quacker got the correct answer. I learned something today.

NOTICE: Proof of Mississippi Sales Tax to accompany all new and used boats bought from an out-of-state or in-state dealer along
with dealer’s invoice. A copy of a notarized or witnessed bill of sale must accompany all applications if boat is purchased from an
individual. If this boat has been registered in your name in another state, please send a copy of that registration in lieu of a bill of sale.

Bought new or used from any dealer, sales tax required.

Bought from an individual, no sales tax required.

Thanks in advance.

The kicker here is putting the trolling motor on it. If there is no motor on a boat under a certain length, it does not require registration.

I know I wont pay sales tax for the boat in AL but when I come to MS to register the boat I will pick up the tab then correct? Then when I register the trailer I can register the boat? Any pointer would help on this topic. I am totally lost to this because i have never delt with a new boat buy. Thanks for any responses

I guess i may interpreting this wrong but it says a NEW BOAT BUY! In that case sales tax is applicable. If used from and individual I don't know. we used to have to pay what was called a USE tax if the boat had never been registered in MS or had MS sales tax on it. As I stated before the rules may have changed since I was selling boats.

It's right there in big red letters on the registration form that you don't need proof of sales tax if bought from an individual.

Gotcha!
