had that happen to one of our trucks, but it was because the guy driving it filled it too full...exploded when turned around in a disked field at "knock off time". he was physically fine, mentally shaken, though...

There's an article that just popped up on the clarion-ledger website...they must be paying attention to us. Bryant and T. Boone Pickens are pushing it for MS to be a leader in using NG for am alternate fuel.

I used to be a certified lpg installer on vehicles. both lpg and natural gas burn with less btu's than gasoline or diesel which = less power which = less mileage. LPG conversions usually produced around 20 % less power and mileage than on gas. At the time LPG was around .20 cents a gallon or 4.2 lbs of propane so it didnt matter what the mileage was it burned cleaner and did not put off carbon monoxide and very low hydrocarbons. Most propane was coming from Texas it was one of the first gasses that was being captured at the wells in fact they burned alot of it off at the well head it cost more to transport than it was worth. now with most of our fuel coming from the middle east the cost has gone crazy i mean 20 bucks to fill a 20 lb bottle

That was propane and you lost a lot of power on a carbureted engine plus 1/2 the mileage. I understand with natural gas and fuel injection they have the power problem worked out. If it gets 1/2 the mpg's you are at the price of gasoline.

Torch,

Things have changed since the 70's and 80's. I have 8 trucks on propane and have a number of well engines that run on it. In the 70's and 80's the cars, trucks and tractors ran on vapor. It is liquid injection now. You do lose BTU's with propane. For every gallon of diesel you are going to burn 1.4-1.5 gallons of propane. So multiply propane price x 1.4 and then compare to price of gasoline and diesel. For gasoline you can multiply 1.2 x the price of propane and then compare to gasoline. Propane burns cleaner and has been much cheaper the last two years for the farmer who uses it to water his crops as opposed to using diesel engine. Also, there was a 50 cent tax credit for every gallon used in a motor vehicle. It expired on Dec31, 2011. There is talk that it will be renewed.

one issue with natural gas.... at least in my feeble mind.

as soon as demand for it increases, demand for gasoline decreases, along with that demand, so goes price. As supply goes up and demand goes down, then gasoline again becomes cheap. The question I would have is if long term, could natural gas be produced at a lower cost than gasoline, all things being equal. ie. as the curve and price drop for gasoline, can natural gas still be competitive.

What if the price did go up because of demand with all of the NG cars and trucks on the road? That means you will start paying more for your gas at your home, at certain stores where you purchase goods, food prices would increase to cover this cost, and cost of living would increase dramatically. I'm all for cheaper gas for my vehicle, but everything else will increase also. We all know that once certain items increase in price at the consumer level, they rarely go down much. What we need to do is to start using the oil that we drill and stop exporting. Plus, if you really want to get gas prices to lower, just raise the price of the food crops (rice, corn, soybeans, wheat, canola, sunflowers, etc...) that we export to equal a barrel of oil. The middle easterners can't eat sand so it is not that difficult to bring gas prices down.
