Well got it done with a scope !! Add # 2....Add #3

Postby DUCK-HUNT » Thu Mar 15, 2012 12:00 pm

Amazing hunt this morn up in the forest.... Story to come

Well today started about a week ago… I had been doing some serious looking every other afternoon after work. I had located 3 or 4 diff flocks of turkeys but had yet to hear any gobbling but on 2 mornings. One being yesterday morning. Yest afternoon I went in to check on a diff piece and ended up walking right up in amongst another flock in an area I had yet to venture into…. Well they had me pinned down till dark so I didn’t get to go roost the turkey from that morning. As I drove home that night my mind was racing as to what to do. Didn’t make the decision till about 11 last night. I was going after the turkey I had heard the morning before because it was less of a chance I would get messed up by somebody else. Well I walked all the way in past 2 good ridges that I had found some sign on before to the furthest possible spot a turkey might could be… I am on a big hill and think I can hear pretty good ways. Well daylight breaks and the only thing I hear are some jakes WAYYYYYY off… I decide to head back toward the truck and see if I can trick one before I get there… first ridge I get to with turkey sign I light into a very aggressive series of yeps and cuts and no sooner than I get the last note out I am face to face with a charging yote.. Time I get my gun off the shoulder he is in the bushes… well no turkeys so I start making my way to the second ridge with the sign.

I look at my topo map and see there is a bottom to my left that connects the 2 ridges…. They gotta be there…. NOPE!!! Get to second ridge and see some old tracks in an area that had been thinned last year…. Hmmmm I light into another series of cuts and yeps and the most god awful hen yeps back at me coming from the other side of this old logging road to my left kinda behind me…. I thought it was someone for sure but some more hens start cutting up so I fire back at them louder and more aggressive…. BOOOM!!!! He gobbles on the right side of the old logging rd out to the front of me… I settle in… perfect place!!! In between him and his hens… it is now 8am… well I don’t call at all after he answers me the first time and he starts getting a little fired up…. I stay quiet…. He gobbles…. He gobbles….. I send some sweet nothings his way… he gobbles… not moving… I slide up the ridge a little staying where I can shoot the old road if he takes that path…. Wait 9am…. He gobbles… same spot

At 930 I decide it’s time to get aggressive since he ain’t moving…. I drop off the ridge to my right headed away from him to circle him…. I get in the bottom and am now at the same altitude as him…. I purr and let out some soft kee kees…. He gobbles… I yep he double gobbles… I shut up till 10am

10am I yep and he gobbles up the holler a bit so I make another move since the terrain allowed to get in his strut zone… I sit down and yep he fires back… I shut up…. He gets fired up and gobbles twice more on his own the last time being a little closer sounding… im ready for him to pop up any minute. 1030 I yep and he gobbles on up the holler so I get after it this time with my mouth call and the glass slate…. He gobbles and 2 jakes gobble behind me… its on now!!! Just seconds later I hear him drumming kinda out to my left headed to the road so I position accordingly…. I see HIM!! Full strut with a buddy in tow… I cut to get him out of strut and let lose the lighting at aprox 1031 A.M.

Top water turkey hunter downs # 2

These turkeys posted are property (was) of the national forest system... Any reuse or reproduction without the express written consent of the fed government is strictly prohibited :D

Well I was supposed to be hunting up in central MS this morning on some private land my dad has leased up that was covered in Jakes last year. He is still recovering from surgery he ha after a terrible bout with pnuemonia. I had been talking to him all week about going as he was pretty excited, as was I. Well yesterday he informed he wasn't feeling up to really hunting hard but he was gonna to go to camp and listen and maybe fish. I was going to call and film and be his ears because his hearing has had its better days. I say well I'm not driving up if we aren't gonna hunt I'll just take my chances with the forest.. So I do

I had hunted the spot i killed the first bird yesterday morning and had no luck so I decided to try one of my other spots.... I get there about 530 and cut out headed to my spot. I raise one thanks for coming gobble from a bird right where he is supposed to be and air till 830 and never hear another peep. Bout 9 I go prospecting....

While walking and cuttin and yeppin I stumble on a bunch of fresh sign but fail to raise a gobble so I press on. Get to as far as I wanna go and see some fairly fresh strutting but it also has a fairly fresh boot track in it!! Oh well I light into an aggressive series of cuttin and cackling and yeppin and sit down by a big pine at 10 to take a break... As I take a drink of water I hear a distant gobble but can't course it... I stand up and light into him again.... Boom down the hill to the south!!!! I pull out the trusty topo map see there is a little drain running through these little pines out to where he is so I book it to get down there...

I find a fine spot to set up in the bottom right at the base of a very steep hill hopin he comes around it instead of over it. Well he read the script.... I yep at him he cuts me off.... I sit back and he gobbles own his own..... Gobbles again and has closed quick!!! I then hearing him drumming..... He gobbles again then I see him.... Full strut 50 yds and closing!!! 45. 40. 35. 30.... I can't take it anymore so I cut at him and he gobbles.... Let the thunder roll at 1030 on the dot again!!!! 2.7 miles from my truck
