Close call- Firearm safety

If I remember correctly I think ruger had some recalls a few years back on some pistols that fired when dropped.

I rarely carry with one in the chamber even having a Springfield XD with no hammer and the palm grip safety. Maybe it is my inexperience compared to some of you, but either on my hip or in the door of the truck, holstered or not, just feels like the constant possible danger of a chambered round outweighs the once in a lifetime possible danger of having to defend myself.

I always carry with an empty chamber. I am like you. I don't think racking a round in the chamber is that much of an inconvenience prior to using the gun. It's very difficult to get yourself in that type of situation if your gun doesn't have a chambered round of ammunition.

If I remember correctly, it was the LCP that was recalled because there was a "chance" of it firing if dropped. I made sure and bought one that had already been fixed.

my ruger will do the same if dropped just right. thats why i carry it on an empty chamber.. glad you ok..

Have you contacted Ruger about a replacement or repair? I would be scared to death to carry a gun that would fire when dropped!

I don't know how the Ruger's are built but the "drop fire" is why Colt put in the firing pin block safety in their series 80 guns. If the Ruger is built like the pre-series 80 guns, there may not be a "fix" for it because that is how it is built

You would think as lawsuit-leery as the gun industry is, they wouldn't allow a new gun out the door with a known problem like that!

Agreed. But How hard does a gun have to fall for the firing pin to go forward with enough force overcome the firing pin spring and discharge a round? I have no idea. I'm sure there are numbers out there somewhere.

Ruger p-85, lcp, and sr9 all had recalls


On a 1911, the gun had to be cocked by a stick, the holster strap had to depress the grip safety, the thumb safety had to be disengaged, and the trigger pulled. cheeseburger, you got a gremlin in our pocket

Got a knife! Killed a bunch of hogs this year and never used the pistol. Thats was it's last hog hunt, by the way.
