Snake Bites

Man ya'll have me freaked out . . . I hate snakes (I guess "scared as *!@#@*" is a better term), and I spend a lot of time wading/fly fishing/kayaking in "snake-y" places . . . A lot of the places I wade require a walk in through the woods, but I don't see what I could wear over my waders that would really help (maybe some gaiters).

Side question: I carry my 9mm with me pretty much everywhere I'm fishing or walking through the woods, and I'm a pretty good shot, but has anyone ever been put in the situation where they had to shoot, up close and in a hurry, a snake with a pistol (excluding a Judge with .410's). How'd that go? . . . .

You can get a shot shell in 9MM. Just carry two mags, one with shot and one with the hard stuff. That's what I did with my Glock 19 before I got a Public Defender. I will say this, a .410 birdshot shell out of a Public Defender is Hell on a snake. And for all you snake lovers out there who are going to chastise me, the good book says we will "smite their heads". Well, by God I'm not going to argue with the book and I'm a gettin' to smitin'. Only the poisonous ones though. King snakes, rate snakes, and all the others get a pass. Copperrattlermocasins are gonna die though.

have a friend that got bit by a cottonmouth. he had to squeeze its head and pull it off. Dont recall how many anti-venom vials he got but the doctor bill was around 30k i believe. This guy is 6'2" and about 300lbs, big tough country boy, said the burning of the bite was the worst pain he has ever experienced.

+1 I ran up on a cottonmouth on a turn row last fall. Decided to run him over since he was close to one of my stands. Got the front left tire on him and he struck at my tire and sprayed venom all down the side of my truck. Was the most God awful stench I've ever smelled, especially after it dried. Smelled like dead fish and dog shat combined!

Gingers are snake proof...thought that was common knowledge. Probably something to do with not having souls...your guess is as good as mine.

the slough behind our old fishponds (burton place, now) was full of them, due to some busy beavers...once you walked down the levee you could get a stout whiff of it if the wind was in your face, but once you got closer to the water the stench was thick....some stump mocs in there that were as thick as my ball python was when he was eating 2 "rats" every two weeks! the biggest bullfrogs were in there, too, though!

I've always heard cotton mouths struck and hold on. I'd hate to get hit by one and have to pull him off. He would most likely get a mouth full of poo also if he held on for long

Have seen cottonmouths strike frogs and pretty much just hang in their back. Do not want to think about one hanging in my leg...heart attack for sure. I have been all over them. Had one rice field that I swear had a snake under every gate. You would have thought I would have grown used to being around them but it just made me more and more nervous. What scares you the most is you know you are looking for them and still manage to not see them until you are too close. Been struck by a water snake that resembles a cottonmouth very much, but never a poisonous snake.

I had this buddy in college one time that decided he was going to overcome his fear of snakes by working with his uncle cutting pulp wood one summer. Afterwards, he made a comment to which I whole heartedly agree. "I have a healthy respect for snakes. They can stay the h311 away from me and I won't kill them."

I got bitten on the hand a few years back by a 1 ft copperhead while turkey hunting and let me tell you it was the worst pain I have ever had to tolerate. Ended up spending three days in ICU and got four vowels of anti venom. My arm swelled up as big as my leg almost and was basically useless for about two weeks. They say the young snakes are the worst to get bitten by because they havent learned to control there venom injection and just dump a full load in ya. Ended up costing my insurance co about $15000 and me two weeks of turkey hunting. The bad thing is when you do get well enough to go back hunting every little stick in the woods looks like a snake and you are nervous the whole time.
