Chufa 4 dux?
Chufa 4 dux?
Good idea or not? Wondering if one planting would last several years or would it be an annual thing?

when I was a kid my dad planted chufa for turkeys, I did not know ducks would eat them, i think he had to turm them up like peanuts for them to do any good.

Re: Chufa 4 dux?
I am considering planting chufa also, and I have researched this a little. According to other info I could find online, chufa may come back for a second year if you are fortunate. Pretty much no chance after that.

Chufa is very similar to yellow nutsedge I thought. That stuff lasts for eternity.

Re: Chufa 4 dux?
Yellow nutsedge is Cyperus esculentus and chufa is Cyperus esculentus var. sativa. Very, very small difference. From what I know, they are both perennials BUT chufa will not come back the 2nd year in locations where the ground freezes heavily. This is why yellow nutsedge is more invasive. Chufa tubers are slightly smaller than yellow nutsedge and look a little differently too. I've never planted chufa. This is just referenced info.

Ducks will use it, give me 2 months and I will tell you if it will regenerate after flood.
Re: Chufa 4 dux?
NWTF show on chufa now. He says 25-30% reseeding 2nd year and less after that. He said yellow nutsedge has larger nutlets and spreads more rapidly and reseeds better which makes it more invasive.
I think I'm gonna spray roundup in one of my moist-soil units to control some Bermuda and see how the yellow nutsedge responds.

Planted a couple acres of chufa this year so I will let you know how the ducks respond. Pic back in June.

Chufa and yellow nutsedge both respond well to fertilizer. Also respond well to grass competition being removed.
Are we gonna get wet?
Re: Chufa 4 dux?
From my experience, I would recommend planting larger than a 1 acre plot. The first year I planted Chufa, I did 2-1 acre plots. Between the deer, turkey, and coons, both plots did not make it. The next two years, I plant 1-2 acre plot and it did much better. Two years ago, I did a 5 acre plot and it looked great. The smaller plots get hit to hard by animals to make it.
