Delta Goose hunts

Postby ho52 » Tue Jan 31, 2012 9:45 pm

Waterfowl hunters are reminded that even though the regular waterfowl season ends on January 29, additional light goose hunting opportunity will be available for late winter and early spring.  The light goose conservation order is a special hunting opportunity to help control expanding populations of snow, blue, and Ross’s geese (collectively called light geese).  The remainder of this special opportunity will be from January 30th to February 3rd, 2012.  The light goose conservation order will be closed for the weekend of February 4th - 5th for the Youth Waterfowl Hunting Season, and will be open again from February 6th to March 31st, 2012.

Regulations for the light goose conservation order are as follows:
There is no daily bag limit or possession limit during the Conservation Order.
Snow, blue, and Ross' geese are the only birds legal for harvest.
A free permit number is required to hunt light geese during the Conservation Order.
Permit numbers are obtained by calling (601) 432 - 2199 (Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm).
The use of electronic calling devices is allowed.
The use of unplugged shotguns is allowed.
Shooting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
Hunters are required to have a valid Mississippi hunting license and Mississippi waterfowl stamp.
Hunters are not required to have a federal waterfowl stamp.
Hunters must use steel or other approved non-toxic shot shells

I am looking for someone to carry me on a hunt since they are somewhat of a nuisance
Not sure if most people charge. Just looking to have some fun maybe bring a friend or two.

I dont know for sure but I think most people do a sneak job on those things. Maybe some folk around put out a spread but I am pretty sure thats too much sugar for a dime if you know what I mean. Maybe someone will chime in.

I put out a spread and use an e-call, sneeking is ok, but like ducks , watching them work the spread is awesome, especially when there are thousands of them doing it, as soon as i can get a couple of more places lined up to hunt i'll be happy for folks on here to go with me, i'll be hunting most every weekend after the Feb. 6th opener. I hunt Tallahachie county... or where ever someone want me to shoot the geese...lol

Sneaking up on them sounds ok. But I'd rather watch them funnel in on top of you. With a extended choke in. I can go about anytime.

It seems like it would be very difficult to sneak up on that many eyes...

Not as hard as one would think.

works if there is a ditch adjacent to the field that you can wade through, and just pop up over the bank blasting! youtube has many videos of this happening.

It was our annual MsDucks group that was put together by our old friend David Spiars (3rd from right). I have no idea how many sneaks we made, but it was a Friday, Saturday, and I took this picture with Mile10's camera at about 1 to 2pm on Sunday after cleaning and stalking til noon. Not everyone is in the picture as some had to leave early so I'd say we had 15 to 18 shooters (not counting the random guys from MO we met up with in the ditches). We split up and ran 2 crews, converged when we could, and filled up the trucks with bodies.

Is there any plans on continuing the annual hunt in the future?

That is why he got the nickname,"The Goose Nazi" on the first hunt. It IS serious bidness for him to chase the snows!
