Biggest Mess Ups for 2011-2012

Postby GREENHEAD » Sun Jan 29, 2012 5:43 pm

Lets hear some of the best clusters for this season .... I will start ..... Here are my top 3:

3. going to the river with a friend in the rain only to find out their boat will not stay running .... the same day going to pick up a new boat and having to replace tires on trailor before i could haul it ... that same after noond going back to the river with the same friend in another boat and having them sheer the pin shortly after leaving the ramp.

2. Helping out a friend who thinks their boat is a four wheel drive :? and while "4 wheeling" having the steering cable break ... then wedging a boat paddle between the engine block and the oil tank and "tiller" steering a 115 horse 5 miles up the river

1. Going on a 15 mile river hunt and on the return trip having the gears strip out .... then realizing there was a tow boat about a mile behind us and doing our best "Hawaii Five O" impression to paddle against the current to the bank ... then having a blinding fog set in, having to climb a tree to find cell service...and shoot all my ammo so that our helping party could find us ... BUT ... i did stay in a Holiday Inn express that night!

this year added some memories but it was a GREAT year ..... our club finished with over 1500 birds in various fields , sloughs, and of course ...THE RIVER!

see yall next year!
May your life be as long as a roll of toilet paper ...and as usefull too!

Halfway through the season, two guests decided that my 14 acre honey hole had too much water....they tried to lower the swivel pipe, but dropped it instead....drained the entire hole, and $460 dollars worth of electricity pumping. :(

I had a buddy drive in from TN to hunt with me. We leave my house at 2:30am to make it to the brake by 4:00. As we pull up, I realized that my waders didn't make it in my truck. He had to pull my booty in my kayak for a mile and I had to sit in that thing for five hours. We only killed six wood ducks and then he had to drag me back to the truck. Not only my most uncomfortable hunt, but I'm pretty sure I won the Dbag of the Day award for putting my guest through that.

But my biggest mess up this year:
Get to the brake at 4am and in the rush and confusion of public land access, realize while on the fourwheeler to my spot that I didnt have my keys or my phone in my pocket. I dropped off one of the guys in my group at our hole, and rode back to my truck. Doors were locked. I checked the whole parking lot with a buddy and we came up with nothing. He called my phone, and we could hear it inside my truck. Great. Keys must be right there with my phone, and I dont have a Hide-a-key (I do now!). We go hunt, don't kill a dang thing. When we get back to the truck, no one has a clothes hanger or anything useful to work as a Slim Jim. I catch a ride home, and have another buddy drive me the hour and a half back up to my truck with my spare key (paying for his tank of gas, of course). I looked high and low inside my truck, but didn't find my keys. I just knew someone picked them up in the parking lot and would be promptly stealing my truck the next morning while I was hunting. The next morning, while in the same parking lot getting ready for the mornings hunt, I stub my toe on my keys as my foot went into my waders.

That was one hell of a lesson.

There are no clusters in duck hunting just memories. You will always remember the clusters.

Greenhead- I guess I am amongst the elite since I was privileged enough to be a part of your #2 "worst" list. Look forward to going again next year when hopefully all goes well! Good luck this weekend!

Start season off by hitting a sand bar that wasn't there the year before = $8000 motor damage

Next hunt = fuel injector clip broke on River miles down stream from ramp - get towed in - shop put motor back together but broke clip.

Next hunt= electric issues with motor - yes on River again at 5am miles downstream from ramp = shop closed for new years day so I could not tell them how I really felt! - once again get towed in.

Boat fixed ???????? Shop claims it is but after this years cluster.......@@@@ No, I wasn't getting back on River this year. I knew if I had motor issues again on the next hunt, that boat and motor would be.............anyone that's had these issues can fill in what I didn't say.

I almost forgot....... The last time the motor had problems after getting towed in, driving home I had a flat on the @@@@ trailer.

I actually thought about becoming a squirrel hunter and leaving the ducks alone.

All I can hope for is my @@@@ luck has left me now and found another duck hunter to make life and 2012/2013 season miserable.

Let's see, had mechanical hell day early season. All this happened in ONE day.

5 year old battery in Rhino had drained down and decided to replace it. Couldn't lift it straight out of the compartment thing, called a bud who'd changed his recently to find if there were some sort of latches in it and he advised, no, it was just the mud cementing the thing in. Took a screwdriver, prying the sides and punched a hole in the battery, leaking all over the thing. Finally get some rope and pull it out, then rinse out the container good. Get new battery in. Go to unlock the trailer and key breaks off in the lock. Have to use a pair of wirecutters to grind down the braided cable the lock was attached to. After 15 minutes of that, it finally cuts through. Decide to fill up the Rhino with non-ethanol gas and head up to another lease. Get about 4 miles up the road and rear passenger tire tread separates from belt, beats the crap out of my rear quarter panel so now, I'll have some body work done in the off season. Unhitch the trailer, change the tire, and spare looks like its got about 20 lbs of pressure in it. Put it on anyway and drive 15 miles to town at about 20 mph. Finally get some air in it, get to the lease, and some buds say, "hey, you're spilling gas out of your Rhino". Gas cap was missing.....

That was worst day for this season. Had some whoppers in previous seasons too.

My only bad thing - other than not hunting nearly enough (so what else is new for me.) - to happen to me was going to a GUARANTEED hot spot for ducks, only to find that, not only is everything in the world flooded around this particular location, but that the only ducks anywhere are on someone elses property. Property that I do NOT have permission to hunt. That's ok, because the only 4 ducks on their place got up a couple of hundred yards away from me anyways, never to be seen or heard from again. On top of that, not only did I forget my $%@& waders, but my boots decided to fall apart as well. It ain't fun walking out of the tread of your boots in muddy water.

When is golf season?
