Best UTV/Side x Side

Postby WilM88 » Thu Jan 26, 2012 10:16 am

Ok, so this summer I'm going to be in the market for a new Utility Vehicle. I currently have a honda foreman (can't beat it) and my dad has a older 4x4 Mule 3010 (Been a great work/hunting vehicle: dependable, tons of storage and room, but it rides and drives like a tank, probably bc it was like the first year they made em) Anyway I'm graduating this summer from State and I'm going to buy myself a graduation present and right now I'm leaning towards a new UTV preferably a Can am Commander, Polaris Rzr or Ranger, don' want another mule, don't know much about the Rhinos ( not really a Yamaha fan) and I guess there is The Honda Big Red, and Arctic cat whatever it is. I would like to be able to hunt of this machine and work, plant etc. but I'd also like to "play" on it during the spring and summer i've got a few buddies that go riding about every other weekend. What i'm saying is I don't want it to be one dimensional (either work or play). Anyway I know some of the machines I listed have hardly any bed space.. but I would get a custom front rack made that either bolted or welded on the front roll bars over the hood that would open up more room for gear, hunting stuff, etc to be carried/hauled. I'd just like to hear some feedback, pros and cons from ya'll that have or have had UTVS. All input is greatly appreciated.

Myself and a buddy purchased UTV's this fall for hunting, work, riding.

I bought a ranger, he a Rhino.

Both, if do it again, will get the can-am. It's more a mixture of the two.

Notes from this fall.
Both did extremely well in muddy conditions.
Both hauled everything we needed, with the ranger having more storage.
Both held up throughout the hunting season

Hauling 3 people? Yeah, the node goes to the ranger, although most just sat in the back as the dog took the seat. I hunt with "big" people and usually only 2 set in the front anyway.

Trails, the ranger is 'big' and gets bigger in the timber. The rhino could get further into the woods to retrieve game.

You really can't go wrong with either one.

Then there's the Can am. It's a war horse. Fun to drive (sporty), fun to use (hauls gear like a champ could get more stuff in than the Rhino), and seemed to navagate the woods better than my ranger.

After running the 2, I'd lean hard toward the can am
If I don't do it, I ain't gettin nun.......So i'm doing it

Also check out the Kawasaki Teryx...I bought one in the summer of 2010...on my second duck season with it...it's been great. I've got gun scabbards (not shown in pictures), aftermarket tires/rims, and a winch (also not in pics) on mine. Again, it's been great for hunting and also for playing in the off-season. I've had as many as 5 grown men with gear (guns/blind bags/etc) on mine at one time going out to the pit. Pics attached.

Yeah I didn't mean to leave out the Teryx. I am def. leaning towards the Can am Commander at the moment. Seems to be the best of both worlds as far as work and play goes. I know they are proud of em.... but I don't expect them to be cheap. I love the Rzr 800 and 900 but they have such a small bed.

well, i got a honda big red, down sides i have found is the rev limiter(sucks in reverse), and ugly booty front bumper.
Bumber i have fixed, rev limiter is only a problem once your already stuck there is a fix, but i haven't done it yet.
it will haul a heck of a load, and the ability to truely lock in all 4 tires is awsome, as is having large tires all the way around (if i ever wear the bighorns out, i will go a little larger tires). have been in some boggy ground following a ranger, and when he sunk his, i went around and pulled him out.
I have two little boys, so built in safety was a big player in what i got, the half doors, and full side nets that can be rolled out of the way were a huge plus for me over the ranger, as was the limited top end speed
it navigates the woods much better than the 800 ranger, and takes hills better ( doesn't lose traction and have to tear a road up to get to the top) the big red does have slightly less ground clearance, but i haven't been able to tell that it makes much differance yet.

the ranger is a good machine, and the pros and cons to me nearly equal it out with the longevity that comes with the honda name.

i also don't abuse a machine the way many do, i will take one off trail, but i don't go riding lake bottoms and try to find out what it takes to stop it or try to see how deep you can go before it drowns out.

if i had unlimited pockets, i would probably go with the Can Am Commander, but that machine stock is several grand higher than what i got in my honda after i put the roof, windshield, materials to build the bumper, added aluminum stick stoppers, and the winch.

i have been on several rhinos, they are great machines, but the bucket seats where a turn off, and the leg room in them and the teryx was not enough for me (i'm 6'3")

just my take on the machines

That is a nice ride. But $18k? I understand it's fairly new and has a roof and around 1000 dollars worth of tires and wheels on it but it also has 200 hours on it.... I can get a brand new one for $15 even. That's def. what I would like to have. Just a good ways out of my price range right now. Shoot me a pm.

The machine is tech my brothers but that what he was asking. I just use it on the club and its a BEAST to say the least. It has the extended warranty and lots of extras, but we really dont need it so he said he would take payoff. Shoot me a PM and we will discuss details.

The warranty is transferable also.

i actually like them, they don't dig in so fast that your bad stuck (with the exception of beaver pond incedent), they clean out rather well, but in heavy mud, there are better tires. i ride black top a fair amount between my house and a lease down the rd, and they ride really well and are not wearing at all. they have been through bushhoged stobs and cane, no flats yet. in hill mud, they are great, i doubt they would be worth much in buck shot mud, but i have yet to see a factory tire that was.

that being said, they are by far the best factory tire i have ever had on a machine and definatley do not mind riding them for another year or two
