Did we ever figure out if it was a ring neck? I can't tell by the picture of the mount whether it has a ring on the bill or not.

according to the guys that killed it, the biologist that banded it and tracked it for breeding records said it was a ringneck.

You have a bigger picture? Still looks like scaup to me. Ringnecks have dark grey bills with prominent white lines behind the tip and where it meets the head. I don't see the brown ring on the neck or the white lines on the bill. Didn't he get the band info back saying the species? Not saying you are wrong since you are just going on what he said.

Ringneck Duck ID

Latin: Aythya collaris
Average length: M 17", F 16.6"
Average weight: M 1.6 lbs., F 1.5 lbs.
Description: Although male ring-necked ducks superficially resemble their counterparts in greater and lesser scaup, their peaked, angular head profile, distinctive white bill markings and uniformly dark upper wings distinguish them. Female ring-necked ducks most closely resemble female redheads, but are distinguished by their smaller size; peaked, angular head profile; and pale region around the face. Male ring-necked ducks have an iridescent black head, neck, breast and upperparts. The belly and flanks are whitish to grayish, with a distinctive triangular white wedge extending upward in the area in front of the folded wing. The bill is slate with a white border around the base and nares, and a pale white band behind the black tip.

The "ringneck" name is derived from a faint brownish ring around the base of the neck, which is visible only upon close inspection. The legs and feet are gray-blue and the iris is yellow. Ring-necked ducks are silent except in display, when a low whistling note is uttered. Female ring-necked ducks have a brown head with a black crown, light brown cheeks and chin and a white eye ring. A narrow white line extends from the eye to the back of the head. The bill is slate with a faint white band near the tip. The neck, back, sides and flanks are brown and the belly is white. The legs and feet are gray-blue and the iris is brown. Female vocalizes a soft, rolling "trrr."

It has a brown ring around its neck. I will take more pictures when i get to camp tonight. And yes the cert says Ringneck

I know how to ID a ringneck, thanks. All I was saying is that the picture didn't make it look like one. Either the taxidermist messed up painting the bill, or there is a weird glare making look blue with no white lines.

I'm no taxidermist, but the bill on a taxi'd bird is painted it's art.

It's a ringneck....

A scaup is called a dog gris in S. Louisiana.... anyone know why? Dos Gris in French means silver back, there should be more white on the back of a dos gris. That's the back of a ring neck. I'll go with ring neck until someone like Pat chimes in.

Dos gris, n., an American scaup duck, Fuligula marila. The word is from the Louisiana French for gray back, from the bird’s coloration.

Literal it should be Two Grey.
