Re: Protein Pellets
I had to mix it with corn first to get them to eating it. Our success has been minimal voer a two year period. We've never took a pic of a good buck at ours. Always does and small bucks. We're giving it one more year, following this deer season. In the meantime, we are goign to focus more on summer, early fall food plots. You can plant it a lot cheaper than you can buy it in a bag. Of course then you have to depend on the weather but we want to try somethign different.

Re: Protein Pellets
Traditional AG land doesn't offer deer much food when they need it most, Dec-MayLawDawg wrote:another question. do you need to do it if you have ag land around where beans are grown and the deer get a good bit of protein?
I would first suggest planting all you can in white clover, durana or ladino or mix both.
If you cant plant clover or really want to maximize results then protein feed
I use gravity feeders with snorkel tubes mainly, this reduces feed loss and discourages deer from eating as much at one time, the Goal is to supplement their diet with high protein 20-24 percent to get their average up closer to 14-16 percent protein.
I use dairy pellets or buck boosters both made by ware milling in Houston, MS.
Buck booster is basically dairy pellet with apple flavor and a deer on the bag for about a $1 more a bag.
The up front cost of a gravity feeder vs a trough feeder will pay for itself in about a year, even quicker especially with gas prices and time of more frequent fillings, I can fill up my 1,000 pound feeders and they will last 1-3 months under heavy deer density but a good amount of AG and food plots, they mainly use it during early spring and late fall, also during droughts when native and food plots dry up
Have seen a huge difference, an increase of up to 40 inches in antler growth on mature deer.
My rationale is I can spend the money to go out of state for a 160 plus or I can use that money and hunt at my own place and have opportunities at several deer all season versus one chance on a 5 day hunt.

Re: Protein Pellets
Good info "Gibohunter",
Sounds like a very logical plan. Can you buy direct from the mill in Houston?
If so, how much does the protein cost and how is it sold?
Thanks

Re: Protein Pellets
We get it from the Co Op. It is made by Ware Milling out of Houston, Ms.
Yes we mix it with corn to start and gradually give it to them 25/75 50/50 75/25 then go to 100% pellets.

You cannot buy it direct from the mill, but they have a retail store in Houston called Chickasaw Farm Supply. Its right behind the chevy place.
work hard, play hard
Re: Protein Pellets
Scruggs in Tupelo will order it for you.

I get it from Attala coop in Kosciusko bagged, recent price about $10 a bag. You can get it delivered in bulk if needed.

Re: Protein Pellets
Has everyone had as much success as I have had with Buck Booster as far as antler gain? Just curious what results everyone else is having. Would love to hear some
different management strategies. Its always nice to learn something new and different.

This is our first time to use it. They just started hitting ours end of this summer. I will let you know next fall hopefully.
