Re: Neck Shots??
where on the neck would you aim if you were shooting a 30-06 or a 45/70?

Re: Neck Shots??
Love the neck shots on does only inside of 100 yards. Drop in their tracks and seems more ethical to me.

With those rounds I would shoot in front of the shoulder where the neck meets the shoulder with a good expanding bullet.marshman wrote:where on the neck would you aim if you were shooting a 30-06 or a 45/70?
I shoot 243, 6mm or 7-08 because they are low recoil and I am a much better shot with them than I am with bigger bore rifles. I killed the two does the last weekend of gun season last year.. I was sitting on the ground when the first doe surprised me. She was 50 yards off to my right looking dead at me.. It was primative weapon season and I was shooting my 358 Win with 180 grain Hornady handloads.. This was an off hand shot with a Big bore rifle with a doe quartering to me, so I wasn't going to try a neck shot. I settle the cross hairs dead center of her chest and sent the round.. She spun around and high tailed it out of there. They way she acted I was sure I missed. I sat there in disgust and thought well maybe she will come back.. About 20 mins later, there she was standing in the exact same spot, and I was busted again.. This time I said, I am going to know for sure if I hit her and put the crosshairs on her neck.. BOOM, she was dead before here head hit the ground. I got up and checked and the second doe was dead, so I went to look for the first and she was pile up about 70 yards away she apparently died from an impact with a tree, oh and the 180 grain bullet in her chest didn't help either..

This was a good example of what a neck shot can do. Same gun, same bullet, same distance, same day.. The first shot the bullet when into her chest just to the left of her breast plate and was lodged in her skin behind the opposite shoulder. She ran 70 yards before running into a tree.. The bullet pictured below did its job and expanded well too.. The second doe didn't even twitch.

a neck shot will screw up a cape.

I would only shoot does in the neck. not a mountable buck.LawDawg wrote:a neck shot will screw up a cape.

This one didn't get up

Re: Neck Shots??
I took a neck shot yesterday very similar to what is posted above with the same results. I usually do not take neck shots, I have nothing against them I am just more confident with behind the shoulder shots. My father loved neck shots and I don't recall him ever loosing one growing up.ronc wrote:This one didn't get up![]()

Re: Neck Shots??
Why would you ever take a neck shot if you didn't have to? Just asking.
Yes it may drop them in their tracks if you hit the neck bone, but it is a much smaller vital area than the shoulder/behind shoulder area. Do what you want, but its a better chance of a kill shot in the shoulder. I might would do it on a doe if I didnt want her to run, but wouldn't do it on a buck if I could shoot him in the shoulder.

Re: Neck Shots??
Sneaker yesterday all I could see was her head and neck before she walked away in a thicket. I still need some meat so I took the shot. I usually shoot behind the shoulder but the situation just wasn't there yesterday. With hunting opportunities being thin due to the river I took what I could. And I was tired of sitting in a loc-on in the rain

Re: Neck Shots??
I wasnt aiming my response at you peewee. Rather at everyone that prefers a neck shot to a shoulder shot. I mentioned they have their place when you can't see their shoulder. I'm just shocked to see so many people that would rather go for a neck shot than a shoulder.
Re: Neck Shots??
You shoot em in the neck and they drop, you either kill them or you completely miss them, there really is no in-between ground on neck shots. As I've stated before, I take what shot is presented to me. High shoulder shots put em DRT as well but there is also a risk of injuring a deer or not finding it if you make a bad "body" shot.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Re: Neck Shots??
My buddy shot one the other day and i went and helped him look. He shot it dead center of the neck with a 7 mag and he ran off like nothing happened. We found a little blood but not anything else. Yesterday afternoon he texted me and said he saw him and could not get a shot. My cousin also had the same thing happen a few years ago. He shot it in the neck and it ran off and we trailed him and trailed him and never found nothing. My other cousin killed him like two weeks later. He had a bullet hole right beetween the neck bone a wind pipe. Nothing but meat and it was with a 30-06. I shot one yesterday morning in the neck cause it was all i had with my 7mm 08 and he collapsed quicker than most i have ever seen. But i usually shoot all deer dead center of the shoulder and it puts em down.

Re: Neck Shots??
I use to shoot deer in the neck all of the time, but I shot a nice 7 point in the neck one time and it melted him. Never even kicked. I watched him thru the scope for a prolly close to a minute and he never moved so I was satisfied that he was dead. I got out of the stand, walked back to get the 4 wheeler and came back to get him..... Gone.
You could see where he stumbled off for 15 or 20 yards and then he got to his feet and we trailed blood for over a quarter. Never found him.
Kinda hesitant about it now.
