Re: What do you do to get "the spot"
that used to depend on how much effort the spot is worth. But these days it doesn't matter as much as attaing solitude. Even if you get the spot assumed (at best) to be desired by everyone, that's no assurance that you will able to work a duck. The quality of the hunt is determined by what happens between me and the duck. If I think that may be compromised by those who focus more on keeping score, then I'll factor into how much effort it might be worth. Bottom line is - what anyone does to secure 'the spot' should be as guarded a secret as its location. Anything offered in response may just be wishful thinking or indication of what your potential competitors will do to run over others to get what they want. It's just a duck.blackhawk0718 wrote:As I sit here at 5 am realizing I have been here since 3 am and we still have an hour to go, I was wondering what bone headed things yall do to ensure to hetting "the spot"

Very well said, for me it's about working the birds, (if I am lucky) and watching others experience success.Anatidae wrote:that used to depend on how much effort the spot is worth. Well opener for west la we got out there the night before at seven slept on the ground and killed eleven man limit in thirty minutes, and yes worth every bit of the trouble
Re: What do you do to get "the spot"
I have gotten in the marsh at 1 am and took turns fending off folks who heard about our honey hole from a "friend" of mine, and sleeping in shifts to get to the spot.

Re: What do you do to get "the spot"
I've done all the things you guys have mentioned, but now that my boys are getting close to the age of being able to go with me I think I will just start throwing $1000 bills at the problem. There's just not any hunting worth dragging a kid out at 3:00 am to wait for hours
Re: What do you do to get "the spot"
we leave the camp between 12-3:30 to drive 8 miles and sit at the "hole"... every day after we finish hunting we do nothing but scout to find the best chance. when we find the best chance at a good hunt we do everything we feel necessary to make sure we are there and away from anyone else so that we can work the birds well enough to get their feet wet... then after the hunt, we do it all again... no rest for the weary when we roll into camp.

for exmaple you could kill a 4 greenheads (two banded), a mallard/black cross, and a mallard/gaddy cross and smash a hot blonde on the way back to the ramp and call it a hell of a day

I get my friend Bryhn to go to the spot at 3:00 am and I show up at 6:00 and start my hunt with him after he has the decoys out.

Wake up at 2:30 AM to cook some biscuits and bacon for my buddies, whom I meet at 3:30. We then drive into the delta, about an hour from home. At 5:00 AM, we leave the parking lot on foot as 4-wheelers pass us. After they go on, we turn down the foot path to our spot. A mile and a half down the path and it's dekes out by 5:45, then, just a matter of staying warm until we feel the teal start to whistle in.

I wake up, crank my truck about ten minutes before I leave, drive 9-20 miles depending on where I hunt that morning and get set up. Usually get set up with ten minutes or so to shooting time.
Not as exciting as some of yalls morning routines but it works for me.

wake up about 5:30 have a 6' victoria secret blonde model feed me breakfast that a big blk women named gladis spent all night preparing... have a mexican named jose assist me with my waders that are room temp. while the other mexican named gilberto pulls the mini truck around to pick me up (heat running) or in this case the A/C... drive down to the hole where a third mexican named jorge pronounced 'hor hey' waits for me with a loaded gun, the decoys set, a cuban and a roll of toilet paper... I wait for shooting time and selectively shoot blacks and green maybe a sprig and banded widgeon to fill my limit and then head back to the camp to a jacuzzi bath and get my morning massage before a mid day nap...
