Be Careful you never know. . .

Postby sevenhead » Wed Dec 14, 2011 6:26 pm

Skipped out on work this morning to go hunt in a spot that I had set up two weeks ago. I was really ready to see what this spot might produce as I had found a ton of scrapes and a bunch of good rubs. I get out to my land pretty early cause I want everything to be good and calm when the sun comes up. I make the somewhat long walk to that secret "x", climb my tree and by that time it was 5:30. I close my eyes just to get acquainted with the woods and listen to everything going on around me. About 5 mins later I heard what I thought was someone talking a good ways off, i brush it off as the woods playing tricks on me. About 15mins after that I hear the talking again and they are now about 75 yards out and behind some thick brush so I cant see anybody. I didn't hear anymore chatter for a while and figured whoever it was left so at this point I was pretty pissed that I had taken off a morning of work only to have some jackasses come in on my land and try to poach. Just then I hear somebody put their phone on speaker and dial out to someone. They did this about 5 times with no answer. After all those rings I pinpointed exactly where they where that anger i had quickly turned to a little bit of fear as the next thought that crossed my mind was somebody cooking meth in the woods of my camp, as no hunter or poacher would be making as much noise as these two for fear of being caught or just to be able to shoot a deer. So i'm up in a tree with a single shot 38-55 and I got two potential crack-heads within 75 yards of me that have no clue that I am there. What to do?

I had ran this situation through my head many a time before this morning and never figured anything like this would ever happen. I always figured I would get out of my stand and find out what is going on. The land owner came out and drove around for a little while and never found any sign of a vehicle so these guys had to have walked in off the trace that is probably a good 3.5 miles from where I was. To end this we never found the guys. I will say the morning wasn't a full waste though, I now know my lease is either being poached or used a meth/pot/crack hide-away. Glass is half full.

Just wanted to share to remind everybody to be careful, just when you think something like this can't happen it will and you don't know how your going to react until it actually happens.

+1 on carrying. Pulled into my place earlier this year and noticed 4 wheeler tracks. Only noticed bc we only walk at my place, no 4 wheelers and it's just my family. Needless to say I follow the tracks to one of my huge food plots. Walk into field and notice my shooting house window is open. Didn't know what to do. Had no idea if someone was in it. Proceed to walk into field following tracks and come upon a huge pile of blood. Walk back to shooting house and see where someone sat in the chair and shot, assuming a deer. Even found the shell casing. That's bold right there. Will always carry for here on out. Needless to say I had a stick and string in my hand that day. Called it a day and left. Felt violated someone would do that on our property. No telling what they shot.

Tim holla next time. I'm only a few minutes away

Joey luckily gaddis aint far away and Ted came lookin for them too. Just kinda weird that they kept using their phone on speaker aint no way they were huntin. For sure gonna be carrying something on my side next time. These cats know we don't ever come out during the week. Just don't know how they never saw me going in.

Makes me think about the book "The Dummy Line". Seeing boot prints or tracks on your land and hearing an actual person or pulling in to camp before or after sun up/down and someone being there are two different ball parks. People will act instinctively knowing they are caught poaching, or trespassing. Always something to think about, esp. going hunting alone.

Did you look in the are they were well to make sure they weren't hiding stolen goods or a body? Man, I've seen some stories on the news a couple of times over the years were hunters just happen to be in the right place at the right time to catch some theives and killers. This day in time, there is no telling what they were up to.
