Tidal marshes public and lease.

Postby speckulator » Wed Dec 07, 2011 6:21 pm

On a couple different occasions this season I have ventured to the farthest Mississippi coastal marsh areas to hunt. Actually I should say funds are tight and I chose to hunt local tidal marshes. So the first day I hunted I was interrupted by some guys (boys) Claiming I was on a lease. Granted La and the Great Huey P. Long fixed this problem long ago in La. Leases can be made on water OVER THERE in La. However in the state of Mississippi this is not an event that can take place. Natural waterways in TIDAL Marsh are state land. This goes with mean high and mean low tides....... I chose to direct them from my spread and they chose to set up within a hundered yards from me. Well, needless to say my partner and I limited out on GW Teal in 20 minutes and left the amateurs sitting in there tight spread and blowing there kazoos. A couple of days later I chose to go back. I sat up in another pond and took 5 GW's and attempted to make my way out again and this same fella rushed us and threatned us again. I was somewhat disturbed by his actions so I took a trip to the DMR over in Biloxi. It was told to me that where I was at did have some parcels of land that belonged to an individual but that the tidal marsh belongs to the public and that IT CAN be hunted and used legally by the public. It is without a doubt that some one is making a little money from some boys for convieneance and access to public water. I chose to venture back again and scout a bit only to be harassed by the hunter again. Taking pictures of my skiff and myself in the Momarsh. Threatening trespassing charges again. I chose to call an officer over in the bay and he came to meet me and I told him and showed him the situation. Well, it is a fact someone doing this again to me shall be charged with harassment. Which stands to reason this can not be good considering guns are involved. Too bad this is really not that great of a hole anyway. Just a place close to work a dog and get out there for a bit!

Yea, PM Johnny. He knows the area. But, I'll tell ya, I know exactly where you are talking about and those azzholes are full of it... Those are state tidelands as you said... You are right on the mark with it sounding like they might of been duped into thinking they have a lease by some pimp or they are trying to do a scare tactic to run off the competition. I've had problems with the same kinda stuff over there as well. Asked to see a copy of thier lease which wouldn't have been any good anyway; they couldn't produce one and I told em to hang it in thier booty. Hunt on brother!

A guy that works at my unit on fixed wing aircraft told me the same story the other day. His name, I believe is Brian. Do you know him??? Is this the same incident?

Not sure of who Brian is. But a friend of mine works over at the same place I think. James....... He and I hunted it. We met some other guys hunting it too. They were cool.... They got four limits and we got two that day... But the guys stirring the mud got maybe one. You could tell they had issues. Seriously though...... I went as far as calling an officer to meet me at the pilings in that crooked bayou. He did and I showed him where I was at...... He said I was good. Heck! I knew that already. I would not hunt a place that was not legal. But I had to be sure....... I was right!
I scouted the place one day, found birds, hunted it and all hell broke loose with those boys. Im not that old but I remember when guys made fun of me for duck hunting! Wasnt very popular at one time! You could hunt anywhere almost......... Atleast your hole on public land with no worry of someone beating you to it. Shoot nowadays you have to get up at 2am to get a spot.... Thats crazy! But I do it because I love duck hunting and seeing a good dog work. I will go back to this hole I am speaking of. I go back just to look and see if there are any ducks using it. If they are there they will be other holes close by with ducks in it. I have a pretty good diver set up. I do that on occasion...... ESP when I am bound to stay close to home for the weekend!

I thought leases down there belonged to whomever was baiting it?

Officer said his friend used to have that lease. Realizing the apparent issue and let it go.
