Fishing on the coast?

Postby MemphisStockBroker » Mon Jul 19, 2004 8:55 am

Guys, how is the fishing on the coast right now?
I have a trip lined up next week to try to catch some reds and king macks off dauphin island...

From what I have heard the freshwater has got the MS gulf coast kinda screwed up right now, but at Dauphin Island you are probably far enough out where freshwater from various rivers won't be too big of a problem. I know over here even with a high river it isn't bad. Still catching fish in Louisiana. I am sure someone can give you a better report than this from Alabama.

Went to Cut Off, LA on 7/6 brought home 19 reds & 10 black drum. We fished from daylight to 11:30am. Caught fish on live shrimp & gold spoons. LA marsh is the only place to go for reds.

I'm going to Venice next Monday and Tuesday. On days that there aren't high winds and thunderstorms they are catching limits of reds and specks.

I went this past weekend off Orange Beach and we tore up the reds. No specks to speak about. Did catch a bunch of catfood with fins (aka kings). We have been doing pretty well on reds, flounder and specks on the Mississippi side. Cobia have been pretty scarce. Catching a few blackfin and amberback out in the deeper stuff, but I would rather fish for inshore stuff.

Memphisstockbroker don't worry about muddy water the rivers been falling latley but you aint gatta worry about that anyway you'll be in alabama waters . Get those guys you are fishing with to take you to some chicken pens the snapper have been hanging in thick this year. I'm headed back to Venice in 2 days. I've been fishing out of Venice and Orange Beach all summer . and the fishing has been pretty good but fixin to get a whole lot better for the next 4-5 weeks. 8) 8) 8)

As the summer goes on the specks will get better

The water got pretty stirred up down here with all the bad weather over the weekend. The fresh water is coming from the Mississippi and is being blown this way on a west wind; our rivers (Alabama and Tombigbee) aren't flooded and most of the muddy conditions were caused by the 25 knot winds over the weekend. Now that we're back to light winds it should only be a day or two for the mud to settle out and the water to clear up.
MSB the reds are thick on Dixie Bar right now and the kings are as close as a mile off the beach.

cool.... can't wait.
What is your bait of choice? last year we caught a bunch of live croaker - about 4-5 inches long and used them. We also caught a few off of live shrimp, even though we had more trash fish pick up the shrimp.

We fished Dixie Bar some, but had the best luck around the oil rigs.

Are plastics & jigs a good option? Didn't know if these big plastic shrimp worked, or if we should stick with the live bait...

Now, one really really stupid question.... had a buddy tell me not to use the braided Spiderwire. Said that it would actually cut the guides on my rod if a fish made a run. true ?? or was he just jerking my chain ....

Live croakers are your best bet on Dixie Bar but the redfsh will also eat plastics; purple with a chartruese tail, green and black and white with a red tail work best. Also a gold spoon will catch redfish. Really when they're in the mood you can catch them on about anything.
As for line I use mono. I tried the braided line once and the first big fish I caught the line buried itself and wouldn't move with the drag, therefore I use mono.

Bull minnows for inshore reds and specks. Nothing beats them for the bigger fish.

glow and charteruse cocahoes are simply awesome in most conditions. Try them sometimes, youll be pretty happy, but of course not much competes with live bait.
