I think your best bet is to hire an experienced trapper. It's tough to knock them out by yourself using traditional methods. We have way too many bob's and yote's as well.

You will never knock them out in great numbers and even if you do they have proven out west that they will reproduce at a greater rate than ever. If we didn't have them the deer population would really be out of control and if you are reading some of the latest articles in mags such as turkey call they are saying that they might even benefit the turkey population in some ways by killing skunks, possums and coons. With all this being said.......I will still shoot them when I can, but I think to try to control them is a waste of time. Please remember before I am bashed as a coyote lover that opinions are like you know what and this is only my opinion......Jt

I'm sure it is just as illegal as anything you could dream up, but have heard of folks cutting sponges into 2-3in cubes and soaking them in sardine juice or some other attractant and scattering them all over the property. They eat the sponges, but can't digest them, and eventually die of intestinal complications. It will also kill the coons, possums, skunks, neighbors dogs, etc. Supposedly pretty effective, but sounds pretty inhumane too.

I'd like to read these articles. I have seen a qdma article that documented increased fawn depredation after starting coyote trapping.

I have read several articles lately on it, but the last one was in the last Turkey Call Mag that I got. I'll look for it tonight when I get to the house.

Calling them and shooting them is the most fun. Just remember you need to kill 75% of their population EVERY year to actually impact their numbers. That goes for all varmints, not just coyotes and bobcats. Killing a bunch of coyotes and bobcats with cause skunk, coon, and possum numbers to go up (if you have turkeys, that not a good thing). It takes a serious effort of killing them every way you can. Trapping being the #1 most effective. And you have to trap hard, and know what you are doing to make a dent in a population.

My advice is to shoot them for sport, and don't worry about trying to control the population, because it's just not going to happen unless you want to do it full time.

As for your question in hunting them in close quarters in the woods, I've called numurous coyotes up while turkey hunting, and several while coyote hunting to within 20 yards. Just use a shotgun with #4 buckshot in the woods. They won't come from as far away as if you are hunting them in fields, so just hunt them like turkeys and call for 20-30 minutes and move 500 yards to the next spot.

Wingman,
Call me a DA, but what is Temic? I'm assuming its a pesticide that you must have a license to use, same as you would with certain herbicides. And why the snowball effect?

Temik is a pesticide. It paralyzes the respiratory system in high doses.

It is a poison mainly for aphids. I think its off label now and cant be purchased but not postive. Its real bad chit and will kill anything and everything it comes in contact with. That means yotes, rabbits, birds, the neighbors dog, whatever. It dont discriminate and therein lies the problem.

Possum eats poisoned meat and dies. Coyote eats possum and dies. Buzzard eats coyote and dies. Birds eat maggots on rotting carcass and die. Bobcats eat birds and die. Etc, etc, etc. Very highly illegal. We were involved with the EPA on a Temik case last summer.
