foam decoys

Postby jsh164 » Sun Nov 20, 2011 1:13 am

i was given about two dozen foam decoys. they came with hard plastic heads that have a long screw that screws into the bottom of thr head that is supposed to run through the body of the decoy. on the decoy body itself was a plastic mold that fit securely over it and was designed as a M or F/M. the mold looked like crap so i tore those off and now i have a foam body that is actually pretty detailed in design. any ideas on how to make these look good? i was told to paint the foam and i also heard to burlap it and paint the burlap. any ideas??

Sounds like the old Herter blocks. They are very good decoys and hold up well. They are best if you can leave out. The ones we had didn't have keels to wrap line around. We would order paint from Herter's and paint the blocks directly. You can expect to do this every couple of years if you are not careful with them as the foam gets knicks and dings they start to look like they have the mange. You may try spraying them with a coat of acrylic to protect the finishes.

Herter's for sure. Some years ago, I bought a few dozen because I liked their classic look. I found that the heads/necks were very brittle and the paint didn't stay on very well.

Holy crap!!

They are Herters Millinium decoys, you just tore off about 100 bucks a dozen!!!

I have 2.5 dozen and even with the "bad outside layer" as you call it which is actually a picture of a mallard screeened on the plastic they have better draw than any decoy I have ever used.

They were 250 bucks a dozen I believe when sold new.
