Mounts for 35 Whelen

Postby jsthntn » Wed Nov 02, 2011 11:10 am

Been trying to work up a load for my 35. Shot it 12 times yesterday. On the 8th shot today the dang scope slid back about 1 inch in the mounts but the mounts are still tight. The weaver style mounts came on a 444 that I bought in hadad's as a combo with a nikon scope about 4 years ago. I can't figure out what kind of mounts they are but I think they are aluminum. I am thinking about getting some Burris signature series zee rings that have the plastic inserts, they are steel. Anybody else use these or what do you use on your Whelen. It screwed up my whole load development today and I aint sure how much more I can shoot this damn thing.

I used some steel Warne rings and a Weaver style base. Seems to work just fine...

Were are you at on load development for it? What are you playing with?

All I have shot so far is off the shelf 200 gr. Rem Core-Lokts. They shoot terrible.

I am about to start load development too. I was going to start with RL-15, 200-225 gr bullet.

Look into some Talley mounts. Supposed to be really solid one piece aluminum.

I worked up a load with mine last year that shot good in my gun. I was using rl 15 and the Barnes tsx 200 but my speeds were not anywhere near some of the factory loads out there. I think I was a little over 2700.

YUP, BEST mount ever invented for a hunting rifle! As far as your loads for the whelen if you haven't tried hornady's new superformance you need to! Best factory ammo on the market bar none!

What kind of gun do you have? Mine is a CVA elite stalker. I am using a 225 grain gameking and Re 15 at 61.5 and 62.0 grains of Re 15 at a 3.330 COAL had two shots touching at 100 for 2635 fps then the mounts broke. Two lower charges of 59 and 59.5 looked good also running 2600. I am going to split the difference in the two loads and try 59.3 at 3.300 coal and 61.7 at 3.330 coal, and which ever shoots the best, I am going to stick with it. 2600 aint setting not speed record for sure, and is allot slower than I was hoping for. I have a bruise from my bicep to the top of my shoulder right now after 23 shots. Oh yea, I ended up going with the burris mounts, I hope they work.

3600 fps with a 200 gr bullet?
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Heck naw, typo, I meant 2600 with a 225 grain bullet. I edited the post.

Big tip for you guys handloading the Whelen especially if it is the CVA. Use the "new" hulls made by hornady. As far as I know the only way to get them is buy a box of Superformance ammo and save the hulls. Neck size and go! You can get up in the 3000fps range with MOA accuracy using a 200gr bullet.

I got the new mounts on yesterday and shot it today at lunch. On the first shot the scope slid back 1/4 of an inch. I have a torque drive head on a screwdriver so I tourqed it down as much as humanly possible. I remarked the rings with a pencil and shot it about 6 more times. I still slid just a hair but undoubetdly not enough to matter. Load dev is through on this beast, feel like I've been donkey punched by a silver backed gorilla.
