gotta ask
I know this moon has been sucking, and the heat, but I promise this is the worst start to a bow season that I have ever had. I'm talking about not seeing any deer whatsoever. Anybody else having this same thing happen. I've hunted morning, noon, and night...on my places, friends places, and all over and I'm just not seeing any deer at all. Maybe with this moon going down, it will start getting better. It also seems that this moon has been full longer than it normally is for some reason.

Re: gotta ask
although I have only been twice, I feel your pain. Been going to my friend's father-in-law's place for the last 5-6 years. Every time, I mean every single time, I have been in the stand at his place I always see deer. Whether I get a shot or not, I see deer. The 2 times I have been up there this year I haven't seen a single deer while on the stand. Pretty bad start for me too.
Re: gotta ask
The opening week I was seeing 5 to 10 deer from the stand on every hunt, but last week I hunted a total of 4 times and did not see a deer, so yeah, I'm experiencing the exact same thing down in the Vicksburg area. I too have been blaming it on the moon and the heat (and the skeetters! Man are they terrible right now!). The forecast for this coming week looks much better....stick with it!
Re: gotta ask
+1 along with everybody else I've talked to...it's just slow slow slow by normal standards
The only people I know that are really having any type of normal success rates are those hunting over feeders and fences...or both...and I've even talked to guys hunting over feeders that aren't seeing nearly the deer in the daylight they are used to seeing.
example of one of those having success...

Re: gotta ask
I am hunting on the ms river, and I have seen at least twenty different racked bucks. A buddy of mine had 16 bucks under him one afternoon. None hit the 150 mark but we are happy to still see all of these bucks because the entire island was under for several weeks. It amazes me how all of these deer adapted and survived.

It is amazing....
Why is my mouth so dry this morning, when I drank so much last night?
Re: gotta ask
I hunt on the river too, and week before season opened we were seeing more deer and more sign than usual (as well as others I talked to hunted river bottoms), we were surprised and excited as we were totally flooded the same...however, after opening day they've just ceased to move in the daylight...I guess moon/weather...they haven't all just leftGant wrote:I am hunting on the ms river, and I have seen at least twenty different racked bucks. Re: gotta ask
It's just the moon. Every year it is bad the second week to week 1/2. In my bow kill book, i've only killed 3 deer from Oct 9-18 since 1993. Business will pick up at the end of this week.

Re: gotta ask
Yeah I kinda figured all of the above, but it has been bad the whole season. Not just the past week and a half.
Re: gotta ask
Camlock, is your club shooting does or limiting bucks this year. We are not killing does and only one buck per membership for right now. I think we are better off then what everybody thinks.
Re: gotta ask
My club in Bolivar County is not doing anything different. Full allotment of does and bucks.
Re: gotta ask
Todo, I feel like once the rifle hunters get in the woods they will see that we didn't lose that many. Our woods are so full of browse and acorns that you don't see the deer on the side of the roads like everybody is used to in the past. I am hoping we will adjust our limits later.
Re: gotta ask
we shoot does...and we actually loosened our buck size rules this season...we've killed 3 does and 1 buck (buck shouldn't have been shot, was an uh-oh small young deer), but nobody is hardly even seeing deer from the stand. It's crazy by comparison to the usual Oct huntingGant wrote:Camlock, is your club shooting does or limiting bucks this year. We are not killing does and only one buck per membership for right now.
