Blown Transmission 68,000 Miles

Had to do a total replace on a 2006 ford expedition that pulled a 4-wheeler once, and never had any other load put on it. It never gave me any problems just up and died on me at memphis airport. Had a 3k bill at the dealership for the tranny + a $500 tow bill from memphis back to tupelo.

Thats the only time I wished that I had let the telemarketer sell me the rip-off extended warranty.

I've always been told that the 100,000 mile mark was the magic number for transmission servicing on 99-up chevys....had mine on my '00 Z71 serviced at around 100K, then again at around 175 K (had a solenoid in the tranny go back so they serviced it while they were in there). Transmission finally went out and had to rebuild at 207K. 260K now with no problems since the rebuild......

if you want to add and external filter that is a spin type, just tap into the line that feeds the transmission fluid cooler. then you can change it out quickly and easily. it should also add a pint to a quart of oil to the system. my next truck i will put an extra auxilary cooler on and my add me a filter there also in front of the two coolers to keep particles out of them and the system as a whole.

For years and years on our farm trucks we've changed the filter regularly at 30 to 35k miles. For years both GM and Ford recommended this. Oh by the way, never had transmission problems on vehicles serviced like that either! Do whaqt you want but oil is oil and it will break down with heat and sludge buildup. If you have gone 75k or more I wouldn't change it. It will disturb all the particles in the tranny and it WILL most likely go out shortly thereafter. But change it a regular intervals BEFORE it starts breaking down it will last a very long time! Remember all clutches wear, and when they do they spin off particles which will get trapped in your filter. Once this happens the tranny will start starving for fluid. Heat will increase and wear will become excessive. Then when you finally do change your fluid and or flush all the sludge and particles that were holding everything together are washed away and gone. Hence your tranny goes out very quickly after that! I've put 200k plus on every farm truck I've ever driven and trust me when I say it was some TOUGH miles too! Always pulling something heavy on a farm!
