Cant break a $100 bill

Postby lipsplitter39654 » Fri Sep 30, 2011 9:48 am

Am I the only one that gets aggravated when you go into a place like subway or a covenient store and try to pay with a $100 bill and they say they cant take it? It is US Currency and you are buying a product that they are selling. I can understand not taking credit cards or checks but I dont think a retail business should be able to refuse a sale because they cant make change. This happened to me the other night and this young clerk at Subway said "Oh I cant take a $100 bill" The way she said it made me mad. I said well that is all I have and you can either take it or give me the sandwich. She said no and I replied that I was standing there until she made change. Finally after a whole bunch of back and forth she decided to break it. I had a debit card and a visa check card but I refused since I had cash. There should be a consumer protection law related to this if there is not one already. Any way just wanted to vent about this as it is one of my pet peaves.

I think they do that to cut down on the amount of cash they have on hand in the store so thieves won't be as likely to hit it. But it is inconvenient sometimes.

well they also do that cause alot of laborer get paid in cash with big bills. and they go in there to break them, so it keeps them from getting racked up with all hundreds and no small bills. cause most places only start the day with on 300 cash. but i feel your pain. i hate it for you.

I agree.

Lipsplitter - Just curious, other than than the fact that you didn't want to or you should be able to use cash whenever you want, if you had a debit card and a visa check card why would you refuse to use either of them? Please do not get all flustered, and I am sure you are fully aware, but convenient stores and late night businesses haven't accepted C-notes for some time now. Maybe it was just a bad day or the tone na inflection of the young clerk's voice, but seems the aggravation was a little self-inflicted since you had the debitcard and visa.

What's going to happen, when I decide to top off the truck and I don't have anything else except a $100. Its not a pay before you pump station either. Wonder if they say, can't take the $100, do I get the fuel for free then?!!

+1

Laborers aren't the only ones who do this. Often times, people come in with a C-note on a Saturday and buy a small and inexpensive item just to get change because the banks are closed. I'm not saying that is why YOU did it, but it happens a lot, and then the store is stuck without enough change to care for other customers. Add to that the perception of $100 bills being the most counterfited, and it's a wonder anyone takes them. It sucks, I agree. But this is not something worth getting hot over. Hopefully, that won't happen to you again.

A hunnert is change. Its also the most counterfeited bill. Most all $100 have traces of coccaine on them as well since that's what is used to buy it.
