Hurricane Katrina - 6 Years Ago Today
Hard to believe that it has been 6 years since Katrina blew in and changed the lives of so many people. Where were you six years ago today?
Re: Hurricane Katrina - 6 Years Ago Today
Freshman year of college at Birmingham-Southern. They closed the campus down and told everyone to go home . . . Since "home" for me was central MS, I went to our farm in North Alabama. Being that far removed from the coast I couldn't believe the damage I was hearing in news updates. Seemed surreal. Still does, really.

Re: Hurricane Katrina - 6 Years Ago Today
I was down here on the coast, off Courthouse Rd. in Gulfport at my parents house near about having a (panic / heart) attack knowing my house and everything I owned was being wiped out. Not to mention thinking about my friends that I knew were dead that decided to stay in their homes next to mine on the Biloxi Back Bay... One of the saddest days for the coast that I can ever remember. The coast will never be the same again...

Re: Hurricane Katrina - 6 Years Ago Today
I got a call from my dad the morning before it hit saying, "Get your stuff together I am leaving for this one". Knowing that in nearly 60 years he had never even considered leaving I decided to hit the road with him. We all ended up in Dothan, AL. I did let a few people stay in my house because they were close to the beach and I knew my house in Pass Christian was in no danger of flooding. They managed to get a call through to me to let me know a tornado hit the house and my entire roof was gone. My best friend that went with us got a call telling him that most of his roof was gone. Standing there wondering what I was gonna do, knowing I didnt have house anymore, I looked up and saw a camper place across the street. Walked over asked the owner about a camper they had on sale. After he put 2 and 2 together he realized I lost my house. He said he had been through it. He then reached in his desk pulled out the file on the camper, looked at me and said there is the receipt where I payed for it and I wont take a penny more for it! We then went to Wal-Mart and bought about 2 grand in canned and non perishable food, we knew everyone was gonna need help. Then to home depot and bought 4 generators and 4 window units for ourselves and family. While at Wal-Mart I also got 2 cases of beer and 2 Jerry Clower cds. We got back to the motel and my buddy asked me what are we gonna do now? I walked over put the first Clower CD in grabbed 2 beers and said"our families are safe, houses are trashed but we certainly are not gonna sit here and cry about it!" And the rest is history!

I was looking for some dry clothes from being in the water. Pretty much praying that it was not going to be as bad as I already knew it was. ( 27' above sea level we had 4 foot of water in my home)

I was in grad school at State.... Saw a tornado go over my house and head to campus. Guess it was the same one that flung a 2x4 through my office window on the 4th floor of Dorman Hall. Cant imagine how bad it was for those on the coast during the thick of it.

Working at the State Health Department in Jackson. For months afterward, I was one of the many people sent down to work during the disaster.

They had 27 ft of water in the plant. The million gallon tank busted during the storm. We went in a couple of weeks later to survey all the damage to their heaters and had to replace them all due to saltwater intrusion. Yeah it was pretty bad, but the flies were having a field day.

Starkville, beer deep, without a care in the world.

Went to the home place in Simpson County. A woman from NOLA who evacced with us looked out towards the south that morning and said "looks like the end of the world".
Lived up there for about 2 weeks. Power was on at the house in Ocean Springs before it was on up in Simpson County.
Ran a generator for an hour a day to keep the deep freezer from thawing out and looked forward to that hour so we could plug a fan in.
We thought we were evacuating. We just moved to another diaster zone. Ate sand pears for 3 days, crapped in the yard.

Mobile. Knowing that my company wanted me to move to Dothan, I went ahead and moved my stuff that Saturday. It hit the next day! Good timing.

Hate to be an A-hole, but I was in my Fraternity house at Miss State having a "hurricane Party". Also build a giant slide behind our house since it was raining so hard. I remember having a diesel was the only thing allowing me to drive around after the storm. People were in such a frenzy to buy gas, all that was left in Starkville was Diesel for about a week.
