Canada's a good place to hone your shooting skills early in the fall

We go for the honkers. Always plenty of ducks, but we're after the geese.

As many as it looks like, not nearly a limit for hunters involved!

One of the best decoying snow shoots I can ever recall, back in '99. On a hill top in Canada. Six guns shot 120 snows in about 70 minutes. They were coming in so fast and furious we were reduced to loading our guns a single shell at a time. We let teh big flocks fly low overhead unscathed and lit up teh smaller flocks, singles, doubles that peeled off into the decoys (which numbered about 150). No electronic callers, just honest to God good shooting. For about 70 minutes at which time we let another group in behind us that shot 100+ before lunch. snow goose hunt

Texas panhandle. Thousands of potholes among an ocean of grain and wheat fields necessary to support the region's cattle industry. Ducks, geese and cranes out the wazoo.

East Coast Ducks

Postby lower14 » Wed Jun 23, 2004 9:31 am

Not a good report, but a report nonetheless. The famed Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay is woefully overrated. I moved from Jackson to Richmond six years ago and heard great tales about the hunting on the Shore. It sucks. Been out many times, several on public land and several at private clubs. We generally stayed out all day and have yet to bag a limit of any kind, even trash ducks like goldeneye and ringnecks.

Not sure about Maine, but Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts are fairly lousy and you actually have to deal with anti-hunting activists at the boat ramp from time to time. Although they don't generally harass you on the way out, as you don't have any dead ducks for them to get pissed about.

I read something that in 1999, Cameron Parish, LA, killed more ducks than the entire Atlantic Flyway. Can't remember the source, but after seeing the crappy duck hunting out East, I can easily believe it.

Argentina. Duck hunting, Dove hunts
A whole nuther world. No limits, no shell plugs, no shooting hours, no steel shot, no skybusting from the other group down the way, or even the other group down the way. Like the Dakotas during the 1800s must surely have been I'd guess.

The magellan geese are likely the very best decoying waterfowl in the world. In your face goose hunting at it's finest. I'd go back for the goose hunting alone.

The ducks are beautiful and decoy like those of your dreams...

Given the opportunity, I would never imagined I'd defer shooting to my partner, who also declined the shot. We were spent. But just for the morning.

And then there are the afternoon dove shoots...

I'd concur completely. So overshot is teh region, generally, that states and private organizations augment the wild flight with tamies, what the locals refere to as "DuPont ducks". And what the area lacks birdwise, relative to our neck of the woods, the antis make matters worse. PETA is HQ'd in southern VA. PETA members have been applying for tundra swan draw permits in recent years in VA and NC as a means of preventing hunters from obtaining them. It works.

You boys think it was bad in MS last year?! I spent 2 days on Tull's Bay in the Currituck Sound, North Carolina, the cradle of American waterfowling I'm telling you, first two days of January last season. My buddy told me when I arrived that things were slow - they'd shot six ducks the ENTIRE season! Saw 2 buffleheads in 2 days. But wasn't there for ducks.

Double R 2 is right Argentina is the place to go. However, not for the duck hunting, I have much better hunts in N Leflore Cty than I did in Argintina. Yes we killed a lot of ducks but it is all pass shooting not much decoying, no decoys and no calling. The dove hunting is unreal, I killed over 1,000 birds in one day and that is no lie. It is just a constaint stream of birds, you can't even attempt to shoot at everything that comes over. Load, mount your gun, and there is a target....unreal. But the best thing to do in Argentina is Pegion hunting. It is a blast, these big pegions decoy in to a decoy spread on these big grain fields. You start the day with a few plastic pegion decoys and by the end of the day you have about 200 pegion decoys. They decoy better than a lone mallard drake. I didn't go goose hunting but heard it was the real deal as well.

We have been to Argentina twice. The first time was in the Cordoba region on a dove hunt and the second on a mixed bag hunt of ducks, dove and perdiz (a little larger than our quail). The dove hunt was fun and we shot a lot of birds, but I got my fill of shooting 1,200 rounds a day after that week. The mixed bag, for me, was the way to go. The duck hunting is great but, just like anywhere else, it can be hit or miss. The first morning out, we only shot 10 ducks (which for Argentina is VERY low) but on the last day I shot 46 ducks in an hour and a half. Perdiz was my favorite out of all the hunting we did. We hunted with a spaniel (Pinky) over some of the most beautiful country you could imagine. One of the areas was an old farm in the foothills of a small mountian range and had some phenomenal sights. I bet we walked 10 miles that afternoon and had the best hunt of my life. I have never been on a goose hunt down there, but I have heard it is awesome. If I ever go back, I'll make sure that is on the agenda. How 'bout it Ramsey???

High volume dove hunting tops my list of things to do, the world record is in excess of 4,000+ birds in a single day!Argentina hunts, hunt, hunting

We shot ducks over decoys. The only birds that would not decoy were the white faced tree ducks. the pintail, teal, wigeon, and especially the rosy bills, came at the decoys like they had hurt their mommas! We used the Primos 7 and 1 whistle. Here's a picture of Manuel holding one of my favorite decoys. Look familiar?

Ditto on Argentina, the world's greatest wingshoot. Uruguay is awesome, too, though it lacks the goose shooting. As far as hunting in the U.S., I love the Texas coastal plain southwest of Houston. We started going down there in the early 80's, when duck hunting was in a grim rut and there weren't nearly the geese that we have now. Great hunting for snow, Canada and whitefronted geese as well as ducks, though nowadays there is enough good goose hunting around here. If you like to shoot redheads and pintails, along with widgeons and teal, the salt marshes down there are pretty cool. We get all those species in Mississippi, of course, but it's a good change of scenery. We also did a combination speckled trout and bluewing teal trip there a couple of years ago that was wonderful.

Still, the Delta is hard to beat!

Bigwater,

Hunting those playa lakes can be a labor intensive affair. Typical set up about 500 canada silos along the water's edge to resemble just another big group of bird's loafing, and set up 4 or so bag of duck decoys in the water. The spread is about 75 yards long. Hunters lay amongst the decoys. Can't use a pit because no guarantee that there will be water in teh lake among years.
Image

The fella we hunt with out there has developed a secret weapon (before it was aired on the www) he calls "voodoo poles". They seems to work at least as good as MSDuckmen's white clorox jugs 8) , especially when he ties a string to them and makes them rock a little bit when the birds are coming. Lots of pintail, mallards and wigeon. Lesser canadas, snows, ross too, and sometimes sandhill cranes.

Mexican mallards are the uncommon trophy
