dogs on planes

hey fellas, i am taking my dog home with me to the great state of mississippi next sat on a plane. anybody ever have any problems with doing this? anything i should look out for? the vet gave me sedatives for him. should i use 'em? any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Giving your dog a sedative probably want hurt anything. I would suggest not feeding him his full feed prior to him traveling. This will help insure he does not have an accident in his crate.

The airlines have several restrictions when flying your pet. Hopefully, the weather will continue to be pleasant for your flight. I am not sure of the temp the airlines have in order for you to fly you pet. If the temp drops below a certain temp, airlines will not fly your pet.

Also, make sure you have your pet's health certificate in order. This is an absolute required by all airlines.

You better have a big wad of money! Last year a flew my dog to SD, my ROUND-TRIP ticket was $215, but it cost me $275 ONE-WAY to get the dog there. This came as a complete shock to me, since I'd flown dogs as excess baggage the previous 2 years for $75 each way. I was stuck at the airport with no way to get the dog home and had to pay it. Needless to say I got him a ride home with one of the guys who drove.

The only other advice I have is to beware of the animal rights nuts who work for the airlines. They can and will harass the hell out of you once they know it is a hunting dog and your a hunter. Be sure to have water containers attached to the kennel and something to absorb moisture in the bottom (newspaper). Be sure your certificate of health is dated within the past 10 days.
