The Ole Miss-State thing got WAY OUT OF HAND because of a SOB from ALA-FRIGGING-BAMA named Jackie Wayne Sherrill...GH22 is not old enough to know how things were pre-Jackie but I am and the level of animosity between Ole Miss and State fans was a 1 compared to a 25 when Jackie got here...The reason Ole Miss fans HATE STATE currently is because of the tricks JWS pulled to get the Rebels on NCAA probation...
Ole Miss was guilty as sin the first probation (1980s) but the second probation (1990s) was a fabrication, pure JWS BS...Ole Miss was guilty of nothing more serious than an alum taking some kids 15 miles beyond the 60 mile zone to a strip joint in Memphis...Big whoop...And, Oh yeah...One of our coaches let a kid use his phone card to call his dying grandmother (who raised the kid) down in Florida...The Dwayne Curry thing (about the Rebels offering him a vehicle) was a total myth...
MEMO TO MAROONS: Now would be a good time to kiss and make up with the Rebels because after the NCAA Gestapo gets through with you, your football program is toast for a long time to come, Croom or no Croom...Rivalry games and all that, but the Rebels talent is so much deeper than the Dawgs already that it will be years before the Bullies beat the Rebels in football again. That is the reality of it. As such, there is no reason for a bunch of smack talk about it.

Hammer, that rivalry goes pretty far back. My parents graduated from state in '72 and in all their old yearbooks, there's pictures of parades, etc. They didn't seem too "fond" of the rebels in those days either if you know what I mean. They've told me that rivalry has gone on for a looooong time....longer than Jackie anyway.

Dang, Hammer! You mean I can't get a good hate going on for the Ole Miss/State game just cause I graduated from State in '73? Man, I guess I'm just a wannabe! My pa-in-law graduated from state in '50 and he could get a good hate going for the Rebels.
Truth be known, I only get a good Rebel-hatin' buzz going whenever the two teams meet. Most times, I'll root for anybody from MS against anyone else, even MS Valley State! Don't ever question my Bulldog roots, though. I'll wear your ole butt out with my vintage 1970 cowbell! We may have lost a few ballgames, but we never lose a fight!
By the way, Bob Tyler did pretty well as the head coach, as I remember. Walter Packer, Rocky Felker, et al, weren't a bad ball club either. Winning a few games with Jackie Sherrill just wasn't worth it, in my honest and humble Bulldog opinion.
