Wasps in Deer Stand

Postby bigoak » Mon May 09, 2011 10:42 am

Is there anything you can put in a shooting house that will repel wasps during the summer? Trying to come up with something better than spraying them right before deer season starts.

I've heard moth balls will keep them out but never tried it. What we do is the night before we plan on cleaning out the stands, put those bug bombs in the stands, the kind you would put in your house like to kill fleas, make sure you do it in the dark as wasp dont fly in the dark, most of the time, it will kill the wasps, but always make sure before you get in the stands the wasp are gone, sometimes there may be a nest that did not get a good shot of the spray and they will still come after you. Its still a whole lot easier than trying to spray each individual nest.

Call Billy the Exterminator. He doesn't seem to do so well getting rid of roaches, http://www.tmz.com/2010/04/13/billy-the ... ow-arrest/ , but maybe he can assist you with getting rid of your wasp.

You can buy yellow jacket traps at Lowe's that might also work for wasps.

A guy that was a self proclaimed "Historian" told me that the reason ceilings on old house's porches were painted baby blue was to mimick (sp?)
the color of the sky and it would keep wasp from building nests on the porch because they thought it was the sky. May try painting the inside of the blind
sky blue and see if it works. Just a suggestion.

Use spray foam an seal up all the holes where they are getting in. If you are talking about a true enclosed shooting house.

Thanks for the good replies guys.

We have been using the foggers but you have to open the windows afterward and let it air out for a few days because the smell is so strong. Think I am gonna try to work on some of them and seal up all of the holes big enough for wasps to get in.

15 feet...that must be a tall shooting house if it has 15 feet of water in it.

Here's my wasp-repelling tip of the day....insecticide cattle ear tags....I use 'em in my deer stands, duck blinds, over my carport door for skeeters, farm shop, you name it....and, they last a LONG time.

get a couple of the cattle ear tags that are impregnated with insecticide. hang couple in stand, no more wasp or dirt dobbers. use them in wood duck boxes also.
