What age for hunting?
What age for hunting?
In a month I will be getting a lab puppy that was born around the middle of April. This would put the dog at 5 or 6 months for dove season. Is that to young to hunt a dog?
Re: What age for hunting?
Given that the dog is trained well enough to hunt. I know formal ob usually begins around 6 months so I didnt know if this was to early.
Re: What age for hunting?
I wouldn't have taken my dog hunting at 6 months, I don't believe my blood pressure would have been able to handle it
that's just my 2 sense,

I guess depends on how solid OB is, but I wouldn't think a dove shoot would be the place for a 6-month old puppy. Too much can happen too quickly dove hunting. Whenever you take your dog hunting the first few times, be ready to concentrate on the DOG and getting it settled into the hunting routine and not so much on the actual HUNTING those days.

+1. I took my dog when he was a year old on a dove shoot and Ill never be back. He alm,ost died from the heat and was peppered at least 3 times, and my dog has a strong Ob foundation now at 6 but Ill never put him through that again.SME wrote:I guess depends on how solid OB is, but I wouldn't think a dove shoot would be the place for a 6-month old puppy. Re: What age for hunting?
Just remember when you take a puppy hunting its all about training the puppy not the hunt and your standards must stay as high in taining. Trust me if you do not or can not control your dog others will not want you there. Need to get youself a dove before hand or they might not fetch it and your day will spoiled.
Re: What age for hunting?
Thanks for the info! I have decided to wait on hunting my dog. The place I dove is at a friends camp and it is only a couple of people that hunt it so it's not crazy out there like some can be, but I'm gonna wait I don't want to mess anything up with my pup.
