FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
28 April 2011
Mississippi River Levee System Work at Buck Chute
Vicksburg, Ms... The US Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District (Corps) is working to strengthen a section of the main line Mississippi River levee system at Buck Chute near Eagle Lake, MS. A sand boil is when water seepage move materials under or through the levee during high water stages.
The work consists of clearing existing vegetation and constructing an earthen dike that will enclose an area to be filled with sand. This will reduce the water pressure on both sides of the levee and assist with the prevention of water seepage and materials shifting in and around the levee system.
The Vicksburg District, levee boards and local officials continue to closely monitor weather and river conditions. The Vicksburg District Emergency Operations Center is coordinating with the state emergency management agencies in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi concerning any necessary activities.
The Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers encompasses a 68,000-square-mile area across portions of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana that holds seven major river basins and incorporates approximately 460 miles of mainline levees. The District is engaged in hundreds of projects and supports nationwide disaster response. To learn more about the Vicksburg District, visit our website, www.mvk.usace.army.mil .

The gates on Muddy Bayou (Warren County) will be opened at 7:00 a.m. on April 30, 2011. It will take approximately 7-10 days for the Eagle Lake level to rise to an 87 ft elevation (approximately 10 ft over current level). An additional 3’ of water, up to 90’, may be added as needed.
Per communication with the MS Levee Board.

Negative. Let the fun begin. Hopefully they won't reproduce without running water and just die out...
