What kind of grass is this?

Postby greenheadgrimreaper » Mon Apr 11, 2011 2:36 pm

I waited until the last minute and sprayed my garden with roundup to make sure all the grasses were no longer dormant. Everything died and I tilled it under. Well now this stuff is popping up. It seems every year no matter how long I wait it comes up after the garden has been tilled for a few weeks. Whatever it is does roundup kill it? I can't figure out what it is and why it comes up after everything else has died. Any info on controlling it next year? Thanks.

This is it in the beginning stages:

This is a pic after it has been up a couple days. I notice it always has 3 grass blades coming up from a main stem.

This is a pic of a few of them pulled up. They get taller and the grass blades get a little wider but not by much.

While I'm here I get this stuff that comes up every year. It gets huge and neighbors look at me weird. My poor grandpa can't even walk in my garden for it. My good friend and neighbor who is law enforcement told me it was something I needed to get under control. I'll pay someone to come pull it out for me, I'm sick of it...

The first one looks like yellow nutsedge. Roundup will knock it back but not kill it.

The second one is Gonjha. Its a tropical plant native to S. America that can be very invasive in isolated spots, especially in the mountains of Colorado and California. Best method of control: pull it up and dry it out. It is my understanding that some folks will come pay a pretty penny to come haul it off for you, so look into that.

So that's the reason it won't kill it with everything else? Will pre emerge kill it- for next year?

There are a couple of things that does really well on it. Labeled for some veggies you have Sandea, in row crops its called Permit. But you have to watch it cause it will kill certain plants you may be trying to grow. Also once you till the ground after roundup application, your bringing all the weed seed to the top of the soil, so your gonna have a fresh flush of weeds with the next rain (roundup has no residual). Other than having dried weeds to till up, which helps the tillage process, RU really doesn't help your weed problems.

Image (imazaquin) will take care of it. So will halosulfuron and trifloxysulfuron.

Oh, that's if it IS yellow nutsedge. By the pics, I think that's a good place to start.
