? for someone that knows more than I

Postby quackstackmrm » Sun Apr 10, 2011 6:50 pm

we killed a turkey this morning that had a 10 1/2" beard and weighed 20 lbs. now the confusion came in when i saw NO spurs whatsoever. this bird didnt even have small knot-like spurs like you would see on a jake. Now ive killed turkeys with only one spur and some 2 yr old birds with the "jake spurs", but ive never seen such as this. can anyone explain?

I have seen a few over the years with smooth areas where the spurs should be. I can't offer an explanation for it I think I have read about it before but it's been several years so I can't help you. However I can think of three I have seen like that before.

Here is one killed the other day. Called in my next door neighbor and the first gobbler shot by his son. Slick, no spurs. Came in Strutting, drumming, and Gobbling.

Genetics. Glad you got him out of the gene pool.

One of the 1st Easterns I killed only had 1 spur that was about 7/8" and the other leg was smooth with no hint of a spur.

Gay turkeys, strange phenomena...but not uncommon. Especially around the low lands of MS.

In 45 years of hunting with well in excess of 300 birds killed either by myself or hunting partners I called a bird in for, I can only remember 4 with no spurs and only a few more with just one. it's rare but does happen. Something to do with genetics. Just like bearded hens. Most bearded hens have multiple beards too!
