2,4-DB and clover question

My white clover finally showed itself. Didn't come up last fall but I see it now. My crimson and arrowleaf came up good last fall then went dormant. They're doing good now. Even made it through the white geese feeding frenzy.

Can I spray 2,4-DB on it now to control the henbit and other broadleaves? Just wondering if spraying it on the newly emerged white clover is ok or should I wait until next year?

your clear, spay it. if u got any pursuit or clearfield hit it with that and it will give you some pre-emerge

I checked on Pursuit. $600/gallon. Probably would last me several years, though.

I went with a pint of Volunteer (generic Select), a pint of 80/20 surfactant and a quart of Butyrac. I was told not to look at it for a few weeks until the clover comes out of the burn. I had wheat 12-18 inches tall which is why I went so heavy with the Volunteer.

I was wanting to spray some arrowleaf today. The goal for the clover is to attempt to cut it for seed. I've been told that 2, 4d-b can be used on clover, but it could hurt seed yield. I thought the weed I was battleing was geranium, but I got a second opinion over the phone and was told the weed was probably henbit. A crop consultant recommended Raptor first and then Pursuit. I too found out the Pursuit was $600+. When I heard the price I thought about Beyond. Beyond is a high dollar chemical too. I did put a shot of generic Select on it.

Spoke to SWAG later in the day to get his advise. This guy is good, better than any consultant. Gona try clipping the clover to get rid of the henbit and the few other winter broadleafs. Will be hitting with a little 0-20-20 too.

greenbook.net is a good source to find info on chemicals. It has just about all labels in one place. Sometimes you can search for an AI and find it cheaper under another brand name, just be sure to check the % AI and the mixing instructions. You can also search for a pest and find a chemical to control it.

may also want to check crop oil vs. a non ionic surfactant in some herbicide applications

May also get some info from a Helena Chemical rep, if you have one in your area.

Well, my herbicide treatment worked like a charm! Now I can clearly see the "clover" that was coming up has yellow flowers.

Guess I will have to re-do my plots this fall. Still trying to figure out what this clover imposter is. Looks just like clover with tri-foliate leaves, but has tiny yellow flowers.

sounds like wood sorrel(Oxalis Stricta). chew it and see if it is sour like candy. It will make a very small okra like fruit.

i've got some clover that looked pretty good in deer seaon. planted 3 patches.

two of them are taken over by some broadleaf and grass.

i have a little poast plus, any idea what i can do to get this clover back in good shape?

I put 16 oz Volunteer on mine for grass and 32 oz butyrac with 16 oz oil. Cleaned up everything but my clover imposter!

JD, Poast will kill the grass weeds but won't touch the broadleaf weeds. Since you got it already, spray it as quickly as possible while they are actively growing but not 3 ft tall to knock out the grassy weeds.

I would probably spray the grass (Poast, Select, Volunteer, etc) and then plan on clipping the plot. A lot of what you see in a clover patch are winter annuals that are about to go to seed. A clipping will for sure set them back and not really hurt the clover. In fact it will give the clover a chance to over take / crowd out anything else. A lot of the winter annuals will just give up the ghost and not try to come back since it has already spent so much energy in getting this far. For sure you will be reducing the weed seed bank for next season. White clover is a perennial, thus offers management options not available for other plants. Additional clippings may or may not be needed. Try to let your clover flower and go to seed before extreme hot weather moves in.
