One simple question then, which of these consequences would deter you more from stealing from me more?
A. Getting caught knowing you would be housed comfortably in a cell and fed 3 meals a day. You would also be provided recreation, AC, heat, and even an education if you wanted it.
B. Getting caught knowing that I'm just going to just say it's OK for you to steal and hand over what you intended to take from me without asking.
C. Getting caught knowing that I'm going to shoot you or beat you to within an inch of your life and there was nothing to stop me.
No, I don't know this man's situation. I don't care about his situation because I don't adhere to situational ethics. He stole therefore he is a thief, no matter what his situation may be. I do know one thing about his situation from the article. I know it was his third offence. What does this tell me? He's not afraid of the consequences. At one point in our society criminals lived in fear because of what would happen to them. Now, it's the law abiding ctizen who has to live in fear because of the criminal and the protections they are afforded by our legal system.
No, I don't pay taxes toward your prison system in MS but you can dang sure bet I pay taxes toward the one here in AL. Don't you think we have criminals too? Yes, our system is busting at the seams too and it's because there's no fear among criminals. I don't agree with housing these people at the rate you mentioned any more than you do. Heck, when I file my taxes I only get credit for spending a 10th of that for raising my children. The government thinks it only costs me $2000.00 a year to raise and educate a child yet they spend $22,000.00 to house scum. We both agree on not paying to house thieves for the mount mentioned. What we do not agree on is the compassion part. Compassion is for giving to little old ladies, children, and the helpless.......not for giving to criminals.
No, I don't think taking the criminals out of the prisons, whipping, their butts, and turning them loose will fix things. I do believe that if the butt whippings were administered before it got to the point it is now, things would indeed be different. Can you tell I don't like a thief?

Saying he's homeless or hungry is kinda like these people who let their kids do whatever and saying "kids will be kids" Yes they will, but if you whip their booty they will grow up to fine adults. Being a homeless or hungry is the reason he did it NOT AN EXCUSE!

imo punishment should have two purposes, punishment for the actual crime and an added punishment to act as a deterrent to that criminal to protect against repeat offenses. The deterrent piece should also help keep those who are not yet criminals from becoming criminals. Rarely ever tho is fair punishment for the actual crime enough to act as a deterrent against future offenses....esp for other folks.

I'm surprised this made the newspaper. I handle public defender cases on the side in Bolivar County and I see this happen on a monthly basis. In the last year I have represented people for shoplifting: 1 can of vienna sausages; 1 pack of koolaid (the kind without the sugar that costs .10 cents; 1 condom (magnum); 1 bar of soap; 1 package of bacon. These were five different defendants. These people just can't get it through their heads that it doesn't matter if it is a .10 cent pack of koolaid or a $475 television, the penalty is the same for either. You should hear some of the b.s. excuses they come up with.

So what's the angle you take when defending them?

There's not much you can argue when the store has them on tape putting the merchandise in their pockets. 99 times out of a 100 I will work out a plea deal with the prosecutor. Usually, I will work out something so that they can work off their fine through community service and avoid any jail time. Theres really not much you can do with these folks. They can't afford to pay the fine and the city has to pay the county like $35 per day for every day they put the person in jail, so they really don't like putting them in jail unless it is a known troublemaker.
