Is it to late to plant sunflowers for doves?

I am hearing alot about this sunflower a guy over in Arkansas is marketing. It was in a article in Delta Farm Press a couple weeks ago. I think it is a 85 day maturity sunflower. I am going to plant some as soon as it dries up.

I have been trying to get mine in the ground all week, but the rain has kept me from it. Two years ago, I planted in late May/early June and they still made head. I didn't plant with a planter, I just scratched the ground with a subsoiler, ran a disk over it a few times, broadcasted the seeds and ran over it with a harrow. I don't know how much of a difference that made, maybe not planting them as deep made them sprout faster (I really don't know, that's just a random guess). They only grew about 3 feet tall, but they made head and produced a lot of seed. Enough to draw in a lot more doves than the years without sunflowers.

GHM1, you're still fine, but time is starting to get short. You should try to plant as soon as it dries out enough to get into the filed.

I should also say that I had a lot of wheat on the ground as well. My theory is that as long as you have those bright yellow sunflowers looking up at the sky, the birds will come check it out. Put out a lot of wheat in the surrounding area and even if the sunflowers don't produce, the birds will have food and stick around. I use sunflowers to draw them in and wheat to keep them around. I am by no means a pro at this, just speaking from past experience. That's just my .

Two years ago I had planted way more acres than I could hunt about this time and me and my compadres in crime, hunting, and all other sort of mischeveous deeds killed more than our fair share of birds. I haven't planted mine yet but you just got to be confident in what and how you plant it and it will do ok.
