Why is it..

Postby Medicine Man » Thu Feb 03, 2011 9:08 pm

That no one responds to a request "looking for a duck hunting lease/club"? Go to the top and do a search for duck lease. You'll find 1,237 post about MSducks  and that's about it. Several folks asked for info about a duck lease with 0 response. Just curious? Are there no clubs out there, people don't want to post in the open forum, or just simply never have any openings. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot.
I was just wondering what you could expect to pay and how muck opportunity folks had for leases. I was very surprised at what came up. I guess if the economy gets bad enough maybe 1 person will drop out of a decent lease for fair price? :?:

Not the friendliest place to ask about duck holes for sure.

Not even to lease a spot? Why would folks not want to talk about a spot that may have a opening for lease? :? Serious question.

Ever heard the term "good ole boy's network"? Duck hunters invented it, and you're either in the loop or you ain't.

just a hypothesis: based on my experiences only, not speaking for others

-the ones that do have an opening pm the inquiree
-word of mouth fills a lot of spots, due to most clubs are pretty close knit and try to ensure a good "fit" into the club...as in nobody comin in that doesn't know anybody that could possibly stir the turd pot!
-not many "economy" clubs around, or rather not many "economy" clubs that are desirable. the ones that are rarely have vacancies and are filled via word of mouth or have a LONG waiting list
-clubs worth their salt still run on the good ole boy system. ex: billy is getting out due to financial reasons (divorce, job loss, etc) and one of his buddies that has been a guest on many occasions that gets along with everyone in the club like peas and carrots and says to the club "dammit boys, i gotta bow out, but jimmy has expressed major interest in joining....and he's a good ole boy everybody gets along with, and he dang sure ain't gone stir up the turd pot over anything.

Medicine Man,

What donia said is correct. I have found that out looking for a deer club as well. I have found several clubs with waiting list and to get on the list I must have hunted there at least 3 times prior to being considered.

I have gotten zero real responses from this board and I would be the perfect member. Paying and not showing up to hunt but a few times a year.

Each of our members were brought in to the club in the 1st year and as we have had people leave we filled spots with a friend or a neighbor who has hunted with us before. Like I said in the PM. It is tough to find openings in good clubs. Expect to pay 2500 or more for a good duck club. 5K or more for great.

Do what i do. If you get no response... find the owner of the land leased or 16th section that is up for lease....bid more , make whoever leases the land pay more and then wait for the debate of the meaning of "sportsmanship". I have learned most people that say they own this or that ....they don't. Take the time to go research tax maps in an area you like. Lot of delta land is owned by families from Ga. I'm just sayin'.

True... Duck hunters from Georgia and Alabama can do no right in the eyes of a full blooded resident from the 3rd world country of Mississippi. Why don't you shoot me a pm and you can go up to the big G with me a couple trips next year.

It is almost as bad as the IDIOTS that stake claim to holes on PUBLIC land. There's your sign!!!!!! All that sayin' I got a little duck hole you can hunt whenever. Can't promise a duck, but I can promise good food, good drink, and a good time.

i've been a guest at a few clubs of good friends and most, if not all, have had "that" member that got in for a year and left pissed off or was "run" off by everybody else b/c they either can't get along or don't get their way...generally these clubs were started by a group of friends and had no set rules, only understood rules between friends. "that" member is the reason the clubs have had to establish rules. if nobody knows you, you might as well be a "that" member that clubs try to avoid like the plague...it's like a crap shoot with unknown...like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get. IMO, that is the biggest reason that the good ole boy system flourishes in hunting clubs - you gotta know somebody in the loop, to get a chance at getting in the loop, and even being in the loop doesn't guarantee a spot should an opening arise.

From my experience, if there's a lease available its for a reason.

More than likely if you read it on the internet or newspaper its there for a reason. Really have to have an in, but in my experiece the club buys it back to cut back on members.

In my opinion, if you think you are going to get into a good duck camp or lease for $2500-5k that produces a steady number of ducks then you may die looking. Now I am not saying you might not run across something good for a little bit of money but if you do, count your blessings, and for god's sake don't mention it to anyone. To many people that would have oppurtunities like this come available already have friends they know they can trust lined up. These days you're going to buy into a camp or buy your own land if you want something that produces numbers. Take Willow Break and other camps of that nature for example, they produce great numbers every year, but your going to pay 150k+ to get into it. That is one way of weeding out some people, if not the majority. Which I know not everyone has that kind of money of laying around but these days, that's what the going rate is if you are wanting to have a steady year in numbers. In my mind, expect to pay mucho money to join a camp that you have no connections with if you are thinking of killing a consisten number of ducks. There are plenty of places you can lease around the delta from 3k-10k but I guarantee you won't be leasing it again the next year. If you're just looking for a good camp to join and will only be going a few times a year, I would suggest finding a few guide services with proven histories and spend your 2500-5k a year doing that, not joining a club. But then again you are still not guaranteed ducks. Think of it this way, you are from GA and prolly don't spend the amount of time someone that lives in MS does in the delta nor have the connections that someone in state would have. If anything worth having came available at a price that low, it would be snatched up the day it was let go by someone in the state if I had to guess. If a lease comes available that's worth the price, the leasee either died, lost his job, or pissed off the land owner. And there will be someone that land owner knows from MS that will take it off his hands in one phone call and I doubt he would make a call to GA to see if any of yall wanted it unless you knew him on a first hand basis. I am not trying to be rude or a dick but am giving you my perspective on what you aksed
