Discussion Question?

Postby bigoak » Sun Jan 30, 2011 5:55 pm

I have all these crazy business ideas floating around in my head. It drives my wife crazy but anyway here is the question. We have all the "cool" brands that folks are wearing now line Under Armour, Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear, etc... All of these were created by folks up north or out west. If you were starting a brand of high quality gear for good ole boys who like to hunt and fish, what would you name it? Lets hear your ideas. I will start.

Swamp Armour....LOL

Swamp Armour might get you a lawsuit.

As far as I am concerned there is nothing more American than the entrepreneur. It exemplifies freedom, and I always figured never say never. It's always those folks who got laughed at that always end up being rich.

Southern Brands (that haven't "made it" like Patagonia or Mountain Hardwear): Southern Tide, Southern Marsh, Southern Point, Southern Proper, Volunteer Traditions, Duster Duds, Jimmy and Sook, Coast, etc . . . .

FWIW...Under Armor is owed by 2 graduates of Ole Miss..dont think it is Mississippi based, but they have ties. Drake, McAlister, and Rut Wear are sister companies and they are Mississippi based.

Southern Tide(which beau referenced) is THE BEST HANDS DOWN polo shirt on the market...bar none!

Not sure about the actual brand name, but give the south some credit, especially MS...there are more things tied to this state than meets the eye.

The trick is not to get it right one time, but to keep getting it right over the long haul. That's why you see re-inventions of camo patterns so as to stay the "next big thing" in your line. Any kind of apparel line is a tough business.

By the way, the two biggest names in camo are MS related: Mossy Oak and Realtree.

What's the Realtree tie to Mississippi? I thought it was all Georgia.

Under Armour is owned by Kevin Plank from Bethesda, Maryland. He is a graduate of Maryland University. No Mississippi ties at all other than one high ranking corporate member from Mississippi. The above are not sister companies either.

he played football at ole miss

from realtree site:
"Bill decided on football, his best sport, and chose the University of Mississippi, primarily because of the abundance of good hunting and fishing within a short drive of campus.

At Ole Miss, Bill played on two bowl teams and started several games despite a problematic hamstring injury that sidelined him several times throughout his college career. During those years, one of Bill's roommates was the great quarterback Archie Manning, who remains a good friend to this day."

Bill Jordan played WR at Ole Miss when Archie was QB.

Rutwear is Drake's line of deer hunting clothes. Just like Ol' Tom is their turkey line. All the same company.

Lots of great companies from the South once you start listing them, especially Mississippi. Are the Drake folks from Mississippi? I was thinking that they were.

Marketing is my passion and I love talking about these types of topics. Always wanted to get into the apparel business but have never been able to take the plunge.

Yes Drake was started by Tate Wood form Greenwood after he and partners split Avery Outdoors. Tate was also the founding member of Avery.
