MSU info
My son's a junior in HS, and we're starting the dreaded college search. He thinks (today) he may want to go into engineering of some sort, and is wanting to look at State. Anyone on here a student or grad of the engineering program there. I can read the school's info, but just wanted some feedback from folks who actually attend(ed), not the typical PR you get from the school.

Re: MSU info
Didn't study engineering, but loved every minute I spent there. I'd go back in a heart beat. I had a bunch of fraternity brothers who studied engineering. Looked hard. That's all I got.
Re: MSU info
I went to State for undergrad and grad school in chemical engineering. Wasn't easy, but, after entering the workforce, the extra time investment was obviously worth it. I work alongside engineers from all over, including GA Tech, VA Tech, NC State, LSU, Ark, and my employer LOVES MSU grads.
Re: MSU info
whatever he chooses....please stress the importance of going into a field of study that there will actually be a demand for. Engineering is a great field right from what i've seen.
if he tries to major in general business..slap him...HARD!! YOu have to specialize in something that matters now days.
some good choices:
pharmacy
accounting
engineering
just my 2 cents.

Re: MSU info
Set up a tour or two of the campus and the engineering department. Ask for a schedule of events for the different engineering schools and try to tour at a time when they have something going on. They all compete in different kinds of practical application and experimental application competitions, and those events will really help him see what he's got to look forward to. I started out at Sate in Civil Engineering and was a semester away from finishing when my interests changed but, the school and faculty were phenomenal. MSU is one of the most reputable engineering schools in the world (other countries pay to send their top students to MSU) and really strives to maintain excellence.

I went to MSU for undergrad and grad school in mechanical engineering. It takes a lot of time and work, but i enjoyed it. I work with mechanicals from Alabama and Ole Miss. I want to say so bad that these Ole Miss guys are a joke, but I can't. Perhaps they are just good engineers, that made poor life choices. I am confindent that he'll get a better engineering education and have more opportunities at State.
I remember there being a spring recruiting event that the College of Engineering would put on. All the engineering departments would set up tents on the drill field and high school kids would look around. Just dont recall what it was called or if they still do it.

Re: MSU info
I've got a buddy that's a civil engineer that got his degree at State. He was there the same time I was there getting my Wildlife Sciences degree. They say that a degree in engineering is the hardest to get at State, with a wildlife degree 2nd. I know he worked his butt off to graduate, but it made him way more competitive in the working world. He says the same thing about working alongside grads from other schools that the 2 grads above made.
Re: MSU info
I'm sitting in class right now, and I agree with what seems to be the general consensus; tough but worth it.
I'm born and raised a bulldog so i'm probably a little biased, but i've been to several other SEC schools and i think State has the nicest campus other than Vandy. I absolutely love it here.
Send me a PM if you have any particular questions.

Several of my fraternity brothers were in engineering programs while I was at State. They all have landed great jobs right out of school. State has an awesome program.
I remember all the career fairs at MSU were mostly Engineering focused.
MSU was the best 5 years of my life.

Re: MSU info
im a senior in high school and one of my best bud's brothers is a sophomore at state and he is majoring in engineering and he like it. ive looked at some of his projects and they look hard to do. He says they take a lot of time to do with all the drawing that has to be done and has to be precise but thats what he enjoys
Re: MSU info
I am an engineer from MSU and I would like to be the first one to tell you that engineers are very underpaid and extremely overworked. I would agree with sunnylab and strongly encourage him to go into some form of medicine (i.e. pharmacy, dentist, medical doctor, etc.). You and your son will be thanking me in 10 years.

As a vet student at MSU I'd say pharm or dentistry. No, or very little, emergency and very well paid.

Re: MSU info
Tell him to go after that engineering degree!! Huge demand for them right now! I graduated with a civil engineering degree in 2008 (not from State, I ended up going to CBU in Memphis for smaller class size) and got a great job straight out and it hasn't slowed down yet. If he is interested in Civil try to visit this spring when they host the Deep South CE Conference. It's a weekend long competition with schools from all over Mississippi Tennessee Arkansas and Louisiana and it's an absolute BLAST!! it would be great for him to experience that and see that engineering is hard work but can be alot of fun also. Feel free to PM me of you or him have any other questions.
