I.D. this hybrid

I am not doubting yall on the shoveler/gadwall mix, But it sure looks white too me.. maybe my eyes are just whacked.. Almost looks like it was trying to put on the white spot on the head like a Canada goose..

That is EXACTLY what I thought when I saw the picture! I mean, I don't even know if ducks and geese can breed together but that head dang sure looked like a mallard X canada cross to me.

What about spoonbill/pintail????
Look at the color of the wing speculum, and the markings just above the wing speculum. Also, that is where the "white" markings on the head would come from. After comparing a photo of a spoonie and a pintail, I see characteristics of both here. JMO

Compare the top photo with this photo. Really scrutinize the wings


The only thing still not addind up is the dark breast (both pintail and shoveler have white breasts) but, you never know with a hybrid.
I'm not saying I'm correct, but this is my guess. I would love to know for sure though! If someone gets a definate on this, enlighten us all!

Compare these 2. I am not seeing the gadwall in this hybrid. The only thing that resembles the gadwall is the breast area, and that isn't the same either.
Again, I'm not trying to "stir the pot" I would just like to know what it is.

The bill on the hybrid is solid black, just like a gadwall and spoon. If it was pintail, there would be some bluish color. Check out the wings. The white on that hybrid matches the white in the gadwall, the only duck that has white on it's wing. Also look at the feet. They are in between shoveler orange and gadwall yellow. If it was pintail, they would be grayer because of his foot color.

Look at the gadwall wing and find the white patch. Look at the exact same location on the wing on the hybrid and you will see a silverish-white patch of feathers.

There would also be a spring of some lenght in the tail like a pintail, but it is lacking as well.

To know for sure, you'd have to break it down on a genetic level. You just have to look for the presence and/or lack of certain characteristics. At least you and I can be civil in our discussion about what we think, unlike a certain user on here I know.
