I done went and bought me one in a Remington 700 SPS. I've never been a fancy schmancy bullet shooter, normally going with the Remington Core Lokt bullets in everything I shoot. Given that and the most commonly available bullet being the 140 grain how do most of you set up for this? I'm thinking approx 1 3/4 to 2" high at 100 and I should be able to hold mid-body out to about 250 yds and be fine. Look at the numbers below and tell me if it's pretty accurate from what you've found.
Pulled straight from the Remington website
100 yds +1.8 150 yds +1.6 200 yds -0- 250 yds -3.1
Thanks!!!

Re: Ok all you 7mm-08 gurus
i shot these bullets for a long time except in 120 grain. i recently switched to hornady superformance 139gr. could tell a good bit of difference in bullet performance. but any standard bullet your shooting 140 grain. you can hold high on the deer and your fine at 250.
cwink i think it was is the one who knows all of the ins and outs on rounds for this caliber.
JMO but i would look into either federal premium nosler partition or barnes triple shock; and the hornady superformance. IMO those are 3 of the best factory loads you can buy for this caliber.
good choice in gun by the way, you won't be disappointed

for exmaple you could kill a 4 greenheads (two banded), a mallard/black cross, and a mallard/gaddy cross and smash a hot blonde on the way back to the ramp and call it a hell of a day
Re: Ok all you 7mm-08 gurus
DD,
Go with the bullet that shoots best out of your gun.. But that gun will probably shoot anything from the 120s to the 140s very well. I personally like the 120s because I am looking to fill the gap between 100 grain 24 caliber bullets out of my 243 and 150 grain 30 caliber bullets out of 30-06... So the middle ground is 120 grain 28 caliber bullets and I think the 120 is just about the perfect weight for whitetail deer.
The only problem is you just don't find many factory loads in 120 grain. In fact 7mm-08 is getting hard to find period, but I think it will get easier to find.. Remington makes a good 120 Grain HP and Cor Bon I think still makes a expensive Barnes TSX round. Hornady is coming out with the 139 grain GMX I do believe. I try and sight all my guns in at 2" high at 100 yards... You will be good out to about 250 pretty easy with out any hold over.

I have had the best luck with consistency out of the Winchester. The first box I bought in 7mm-08 was Hornady superperformance. I have shot Hornady all my life in many calibers so this was a no-brainer. Had 3 out of the first box misfire and couldnt get a decent group out of the others. Switched to the Winchester and 6 shots later could cover a dime at 100 yds.

I use the 165 grain SST in my 30-06. Haven't had the first misfire and get sub MOA accuracy from them.bohuntr76 wrote:I have had the best luck with consistency out of the Winchester. I killed a doe with them a couple of weeks ago and it is a devastating round. You could put a baseball through the exit wound without touching the deer.
Re: Ok all you 7mm-08 gurus
I shoot the SST in my .308 and .270 and have never had a misfire either. Been shooting Hornady for 20 yrs and never had a single misfire until then. Went to Vans thinking it was the gun, and Kenny fired 5 rounds of every other brand through it and not one misfire.ufgators68 wrote:I use the 165 grain SST in my 30-06. Re: Ok all you 7mm-08 gurus
Went out to Bass Pro today and they didn't have but one box and they were 120 gr hollow point made by Remington. I'm looking for something more along the lines of the 140 gr, and if someone would make a 130 grain I'm thinking it might be a little better middle of the road round for the 7mm-08. I've seen some of the damage a .270 can do with the 130 gr bullet and if the 7mm-08 can compare it would be (to me) the perfect deer cartrige. Slightly less recoil than the 140 but plenty of "umph" to blow through both shoulders if necessary. I need to check the ballistics of the .270 in 130 grain and see how it stacks up against the 7mm-08 in energy and velocity.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
