Re: cool lookin woody
Could be a hen mandarin! I killed a drake in Southeast Alabama about 15 years ago. (of course I got it mounted) it was with wood ducks, and I did not realize that's what it was til I picked it up. Really cool looking bird, and the hens of both species are extremely similar. Google "mandarin duck" and check it out. A lot of people use to (some still do) raise them in captivity. Also, when I killed mine, I called the local waterfowl biologist. He said some could actually make the flight here from the Far East during a Typhoon/odd weather patterns. Either way, cool looking bird you have there!

Yep, just googled it and it was in fact a Mandarin hen we killed this morning. If I wouldn't have seen this post I would have never doubted that it wasn't a hen woody.

Re: cool lookin woody
According to this site I think you've got a leucistic woody. I say that because of the eye location. Scroll down about half way and it shows how to tell the difference.

Notice it says the mandarins eye is "on the line" and the woody is "in the line". I'm no expert. Just giving my opinion.

Re: cool lookin woody
That is NOT a Mandarin hen. Look at the tip of the beak, and the eye is very distinctive of a wood duck. Now It doesnt look normal and its a cool bird none the less.
Re: cool lookin woody
I believe ya'll are right, it is a hen woody! I just figured I would give him an option to investigate.

too white for a Mandarin. I know some folks that raise them. Even if it were, it would be an albino'ish Mandarin too. I agree, the bill tells the story. Who cares anyways, cool duck and cool pic. How did it taste?
