"The DUCKSTRAP"

Just ordered myself "The DUCKSTRAP" I cant wait to get it in, but I was curious if any of yall with this strap or another leather duck strap pretreated it or do any kind of conditioning to the leather?

We have ours custom made and soak them in mineral oil in a gallon ziplock over the summer. Not neatsfoot, 30 weight or any of the other oils around, but Mineral Oil. I rertreat mine every year and have had them since the 70's. It keeps them soft, supple and water resistant.

use mineral oil...neatsfoot will make it greasier than a non-swimmer at a chitterlin' eatin' contest........

The duckstrap like you ordered needs nothing but a little mink oil. I am pretty tough in all my equipment and have been using that strap for 6 years and only oiled it once. Just getting broke in good

yep.........just make sure you use the unscented kind.

You don't have to treat them every year. Once every 3 years is fine. You don't treat yours every year because you can't remember to! :lol:

I really like mine. No one else will pick your strap up by mistake, for sure. Mine is one of the old "camo" leather "the duckstraps" from when they first came out on the 'net. Maybe 6 years ago? All I have ever done was lather it up with saddle soap and let it dry after the season on the "camo" side. I was afraid that using neatsfoot or mink or other oil might gakk up the camo side???

I have some old straps, don't even know who made them but there vintage for sure. I always rub them down with mink oil but also have use mineral oil as well. Mink seems to take longer to soak in.

I have had my "original" one for 6+ years and its still going strong with no signs of wear, other than the blood stains!

Mineral oil. I've got the "Callie Special", one of 12 heavy bridle leather "DuckStraps" made by the original owner to commemorate a favorite retreiver that had recently died. A good strap should last forever.

Thanks RR....I just got my strap in today and cant wait to use it! It looks great and well made. My only concern is over saturating and causing it to rot, or dry rot from lack of oil.....I got tired of buying the metal ones. Also, after hunting with a buddy who had a DUCKSTRAP last week, I figured it was more than worth it as opposed to spend 10-20 bucks every other year or so. The metal ones either bend or the ducks fall out the top, etc...

I got the 12 loop. It was like 45 dollars. It comes with a plate on it that can be engraved, but they charge 5 dollars extra to engrave it for you....I went ahead and had them put my initials on it. I ordered mine middle of the week and had it in the mail today! Great people to deal with....
