trial on a hog dog

Postby D1 » Tue Jan 11, 2011 7:01 pm

co worker said her son in law got a hog dog last night and now he has 1 to go FIND the hog and 1 to catch it then she got real excited

"HE HAS A 2 WEEK TRIAL PERIOD TO SEE IF HE LIKES HIM AND WANTS HIM"

I told that wouldnt happen

she asked why?

when ole boar hog cuts that dog from tip of his tail to the tip of his nose and the dog dont make it and it prolly wasnt the dog the man said he was you still have to pay for it (learned a long time ago listen to what the seller says about dog then hunt with it and see if the seller told the whole truth)

her next question can they kill a dog?

yes

she said what about his catch dog

thats even more of a chance espically without a vest

she freaked out cause the catch dog belongs to her grandson

I just dont think I am going to take YOUR dog and hunt it for 2 weeks on an animal that could kill him in a matter of seconds without you being there.

and prolly not gonna let YOU try my dog without me being there

I can see on rabbit or coon
not on hog,bear or cat
Thanks
Bruce

never been on a hog hunt or anything but from what I gather from research and videos these "catch" dogs are bad news for a pig. I do know a pig can get pretty rough though.

check out the "catch" dogs on this video.

that being said I'm definitely with you on not letting someone try my dog out for a few weeks.

That just doesn't have any attraction to me whatsoever. There's a guy I work with that does it all the time and his dogs are always beat up, cut up, or dead. I understand how it works, just doesn't appeal to me. I hate hogs. Wish I could kill them all, but I'd rather do it with a trap or some high powered lead poisoning.

As for the trial period on the dog... Good luck to her with that!

the only question I have about this video, and some of you guys that hog hunt with dogs may be able to help me understand

why turn the catch dogs loose when the bay dogs already have him caught and streched out?

and yes those catch dogs did a good job getting to the head of the hog
Thanks

I dont own hog dogs but ususally go on a few dog hunts after deer season. Bay dogs do exactly that, just pin the hog up per say. The catch dogs lacth an ear and then he isnt going anywhere. Most everybody uses a knife to the heart. It is quick and effective. Its not safe for the dogs to try and shoot them with a pistol. Its kindy gory i guess but a lot of fun!

What exactly dont you agree with? I can promise you I can dispatch a hog quicker with my knife than you could with a gun if the shot and the stab are in the same spot behind the shoulder.

Went on my first trip about a month ago...dogs hit about 10 minutes in on about a 40 pounder, the catch dogs were released, and by the time we got there the pig was half skint! Those catch dogs are bad to the bone!

Hog hunts I've been on we either shot them or caught them alive. And the dogs in most cases do get
cut or beat up pretty bad sometimes. Guys that I hunted with carried surgical staple guns with them to
staple up wounds on the dogs until they got them to the vet. And hogs can cut through vests and neck
gaurds when they get the right chance to.

The guy that does it on our place never kills them. they catch them alive and haul them out usually hog tying or hobbling. It is a rush grabbing an angry hog by the feet no matter how big. A good bay dog doesn't usually get cut because a good one is smart and the smart ones will just bay the hog and not try to catch it. A dumb bay dog typically doesn't last long. A good bull dog will hit a hog so hard it sounds like a 22 being shot. It is fun, but can get bloody. The guy on our place stays on the dogs fairly close so that if its a big boar he can get the dogs without them getting hurt. It is interesting to me that he has invested thousands in dogs and tracking collars.

guess I just prefer shooting or catching them......remember a friends dad used to hog hunt and he caught all his hogs and brought them home fed them corn for awhile(even sows)then harvested them....he passed away before my friend and I could go with him

I understand what a BAY and CATCH dogs job is I just dont understand why in the video in the earlier post that the guy was yelling turn the catch dog loose when the bay dogs had him caught and he was close enough to grab the hog and harvest him even without the catch dogs
Thanks

I wld of never turned the catch dogs loose on that hog, his bay dogs are more like running catch dogs and on that paticular hog I don't think there was a purpose for the catch dogs. We run into that from time to time if the strike dogs get on a small hog or they are feeling frisky they will sometime catch themselves
