AR - 15 advice
AR - 15 advice
I've got the fever for an AR15 and have done a ton of research on what I want and what I actually need. I have pretty much decided on a piston driven model from LWRC. Anybody got any good info or advice? Thanks.
Re: AR - 15 advice
I'm looking to start a black gun build also. I've been doing a lot of research and talking to my boss who is a marine/swat team leader. My plan is to build the rifle around a Noveske 16" afgan barrel. It's nothing I'm planning on completing quick, I'm going to piece it together just like I want it since I've already had 1 black gun that I just bought on a whim instead of buying exactly what I wanted. When I get done I plan on having a bad booty zombie killer for work and play.

Re: AR - 15 advice
The biggest negative is the fact that all the parts are proprietary (goes for any piston gun), and if they break you have to get them from LWRC...ease of interchangeability is a huge benefit to a DI gun, and give you amazing options...also they are more expensive, heavier, and may have a little more recoil (not a big deal to me) than a DI gun...and the triggers are pretty poor on the few I've shot... I don't see much benefit to a piston gun and lean towards Noveske (which are probably a bit overpriced as well), LMT, and BCM....

Agree with Gordon on this even the fact that Noveske is a lil overpriced but if you don't get in a rush and start looking you may be able to find slightly used parts for little or nothing. But for what you would pay for just a LWRC upper you could build one hell of a rifle.

Would like a "black" gun as well but would like one in .308 or 7mm-08. Could hunt with it as well. What do you guys think of the larger caliber weapon.

I've got a 9 inch one of these on order right now. This ought to make a great hog gun.

DI=direct impingement, which is the original design of the AR/M4

Re: AR - 15 advice
A .223 can make a good deer rifle. I saw the damage first hand from .223 winchester silver tip shot out of a 11.5" barrel ar-15, there was not a good blood trail but the deer only made it about 50yards and the damage on the inside was impressive for such a small caliber bullet. We are going to see what a barnes SXT solid copper bullet will do. The ballistics are impressive, google videos of it and look what that bullet does to ballistic gel, this should provide one hell of a blood trail. I may start something with this but shot placement should be the main thought not the size of the bullet. Or if you want a larger bullet out of an Ar look at the 6.8, very impressive and can use the same lower as a .223.

Re: AR - 15 advice
Saw an ad by Remington for their R 15 with a new 30 cal cartridge for deer hunting.

Re: AR - 15 advice
Thanks for all the tips and advice folks. One more question though; does the DI system run any cleaner now? I know back in the 90's when I camped out with Big Green our M16 A2's were notoriously bad about jamming even while on the range. (Before you ask, YES I kept mine meticulously clean). I guess I just want to buy right and get great quality. Just a thought. Thanks.
